Another shudder! must be the time of year...

Mine developed the shudder on acceleration up hill.
D3 2006
It was fairly mild at this stage and on the flat I couldn't even reproduce it.

I took it to an auto gearbox specialist in Dublin who brought me for a test drive.
Unfortunately, no hills nearby so we couldn't reproduce the fault.
No faults on diagnostics either.

I must admit to being a bit sceptical about the whole Dr Tranny thing, my mileage has just gone past 150k and I doubt the transmission oil has ever been changed.

For the mileage it seems about due that the TC will need some TLC.

The specialist gave me his prices and suggested I have a think about it.

Oil change only €400
Replacement of TC with genuine new OM €500 + 8 hours labour at €60 an hour.
All above plus another €900 give or take for a rebuild of the gear box, whilst you can get at it like...

Despite the high mileage I am quite keen to hang on to this D3 for a while. I have been thinking about it for a couple of weeks now and I can feel the shudder getting worse. The clock is ticking on this.

I am pretty certain that I should change the TC but my question is, should I get the gearbox reconditioned at the same time. It will double the price from around 1000 to around 2000.

The gear changes have always been very smooth and I have done very little in the way of towing, just a few hundred miles really, so my instinct suggests that it is fairly sound. But I am no expert so I would appreciate any thoughts or views.

So the options I am considering so far;
Do the gearbox whilst the car is in bits anyway or just the TC ???
Will it be obvious to the mechanic that the gearbox needs to be looked at when he has the Torque Converter off?

Thanks for any tips...

Don't dismiss the magic of Dr. Tranny off hand.

I had similar symptoms and they have disappeared with 2 tubes of the magic goo.

Gotta be worth a try before shelling out the big bucks.
