Hydraulic lifters on the cam/ ticking / oil filter |
|
Hi,
I have this noise. And I cast my mind back to changing the oil filter when I thought that there was no seal for the new filter, and later found it on my kitchen counter top, after having reused the old one. I'd all but forgotten about this.
Might this be a reasonably likely source of the problem? I guess I want a new one!
I think I have over 0.5l oil left from the oil change, but how much will I lose changing the filter alone?
Thanks,
Andy

you wont lose any oil just loosen the filter cup untill you see the o ring then wait a minute or two just to let the housing drain out please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou

Hi
Ticking is just on startup. One dab of throttle and it is gone. Though having read up on this issue yesterday, I won't be dabbing the throttle any more.
Oil was fresh in January and from AF. I don't recall the filter having a Land Rover stamp on it.

This tick you are describing sounds like the sound almost every Discovery 3 TDV6 does at startup. I assume it is caused by filling the drained oil in the oil filter. Some claim it gets better with genuine or Mahle (=OEM) filter but I have never heard any difference. In the beginning of Discovery 3 ownership I was really concerned with this but I have now more or less accepted it as a trait of the vehicle. I think the general assumption is that it is not damaging to the engine (someone?) and some reports that it goes away when changing the oilpump when doing the belts.

If you do some research you will find its down to the camchain tensioner, they are oil tensioned when running, but have a spring to hold some tension when engine is switched off.
My right hand one does it when starting, takes longer to go quiet from cold, 3 maybe 4 seconds, hot almost instantly quiet.
Its a lot of work to replace, cambelt and both cams out on whichever bank is making the noise.
To say all 2.7 do it is possibly true as no one wants to pay for the repair

there is also one on the bottom peg of the filter to stop the filter housing draining when not running, when you unscrew the filter housing it lifts the filter up to pull the peg out to drain the housing otherwise it gets very messy changing the filter please excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou

When reinstalling the filter, always install the filter first, then the cap with the new seal, ensuring the spigot on the filter is lined up with the hole in the oil filter housing.
Otherwise that hole will be obstructed and that will cause major engine damage. 2008 RRS TDV6 - Chawton White/Black/Lined Oak - 20's, h/k, sunroof - 350K KM.

I am talking about the "swirling" sound most D3:s do at startup which disappears when the oil light go out after a few seconds. This tick seems to be something different. Did some Reading on cam chain tensioners. Great, one more thing to worry about...

I work at a Peugeot Main dealer and use the same lion engine with very slight differences. I have heard the ticking on start up on everyone even with a 20k one did. Tech help said it was normal and no cause for concern, as long as it went within 30 seconds of start up. Don't worry about it.

My new replacement engine has only just started to make the characteristic tick on startup - but its going in for a cam belt change next week, so its not that new anymore Mark.

I think we all consider it pretty normal, as long as it goes away relatively promptly (ie, along with the oil pressure light). If it and the light stay on, obviously you have issues.
I don't know of any swirling noise on startup though...? 2008 RRS TDV6 - Chawton White/Black/Lined Oak - 20's, h/k, sunroof - 350K KM.

Swirling/ticking... English is not my first language so I am probably not always using the correct word for things. I am sure we are talking about the same thing though.

The ticking is a normal characteristic of all self adjusting hydraulic tappets simply because there is no oil pressure when the engine is dormant and when the engine is started there is a time lag until the pressure rises enough to first put the light out second start to work the tappets and self adjust them so all this takes a few seconds, and as said in other posts only worry if the ticking continues longer, the filter does not drain down when the engine is dormant only when you unscrew it until it lifts out of the spigot hole and some air gets in. Thum over the end of a straw etc.
