Droning noise from front.

have just got my car back with new TC fitted and all is well ,very happy except when I do about 70mph on the motorway and let my foot off the gas there is a slight vibration and a droning sound on the overrun which lasts to about 40 then goes. On A roads all is well and it does not do it at all as I don't go above 50. Has anybody any Ideas ?

Hi sounds awful like the front diff. The main symptom is droning on the overrun. When mine went it the noise could be turned on and off with acceleration and deceleration. I am currently dealing with another droning noise but it's steady and speed related so praying its just a wheel bearing. Maybe worth going to your local Indy to get their take?

Hi Haroosh yes exactly what mine is doing especially the turn on and off with accelerater. I have just had TC done. What next

Hi Mark.

Had a slightly noisey rear diff recently. Changed the diff oils & added Lucas oil additive. 1000 miles later & no noise.
Worth a try especially if your diff oils haven't been changed before

Hi Richard, yes its booked in next week for all oils changing and filters apart from obviously gearbox ! That problem is cured now thank god. It seems as I said when we met she has looked after every thing except gearbox and diff oils, maybe she was never told to. I fear that the front diff is past oil as it is quite a noise and vibration when letting off the gas at 70. I also notice it now when driving slower speeds aswell. I looked in service history and found a receipt for two front wheel bearings dated 11/3/15 so maybe she had noticed it too

There's an easy way to find out where it's coming from. Get a Â£10 10 metre 3.5mm lapel microphone from eBay or elsewhere, and plug it into your iPhone etc. then get an old battery jumper clamp & tape microphone to it. This will allow you to drive around with the microphone clamped into various components.

I did this & it worked a treat. Located my noise down to my rear diff in a few minutes. The noise from the diff was horrendous compared to other components.

There's a wireless version of this for professional garage technicians for a few hundred quid. Same principle.

I have also just used the Lucas heady duty oil stabilizer and my front diff sounds much better, it was whining away like a good 'un. Not sure how long it will last but worth a shot before shelling out for a new diff or having to remove to do the output shaft bearings.
