There will others who can offer much better advice but I've been to Amman and Petra. Petra is definitely worth a trip. I got a guide who I met there and he took me up past the "no entry" signs that I wouldn't have done without him. Got some really nice views. I then did a bit of hiking around the site as there's lots to see for the rest of the day. Take decent boots and lots of water.
My folks have also been on a hiking holiday there staying in tents and abseiling down waterfalls which looked pretty impressive.D3 SE with Hankook MT 275/65/R18, IID BT Tool, ProSpeed rock/tree sliders + compressor guard, RLD sump guard & winch tray + 13,000lb hidden winch, Gearbox guard, Frontrunner 80l aux tank with fuel gauge, V8 brake upgrade, Traxide USI-160 dual battery system, Frontrunner ladder, custom boot storage, Lazer LED driving lights, de-cat exhaust, Aftermarket Oro TPMS, i7 Mac Mini touch screen install (running Windows 10) mirrored on rear screens.
Yup, great country, really friendly people and some incredible history.
Was there in 09, so no idea how things have changed, what with the geo-political situation around it. It's always been in the middle of some tough spots, so I'm sure it's as brilliant as before.
We hired a mini-van (for 6 of us incl 2 kids), then drove from Amman down to Wadi Rum, taking in Petra, Madaba, Kerak and the Dead Sea and many miles of spectacular scenery and ancient forts on the way there and back over the course of a week (or maybe 10days).
Don't have the photos with me at work, but there were many great ones

I'm interested in this thread.
I worked in Amman for 6 months in 2003 but haven't been back since.
Didn't get to visit Petra as I promised my wife we'd see it together.

I spent two weeks filming there in Oct/Nov 2014, it's a fantastic place and the people are very welcoming.
We took in Amman, Aqaba, Karak, Ma-an, Madaba, Petra, Wadi Musa and Wadi Rum amongst other locations.
The weather changed noticeably in our short time there, by the end of the trip it was getting relatively cold, particularly at night.
In short, provided you enjoy hummus, shawarma and old Hi-Luxes you'll love it and there's only really one road so you can't get lost Enjoy yourselves!
Incidentally, here is what I gather are the rules for driving:
As long as the nose of your car is in front then you have right of way.
It doesn't really matter which way round a roundabout you go (shortest route best).
Sound your horn.
Then sound it again. Repeat ad infinitum.
If you miss a turn on the highway just drive back up on the hard shoulder.
With all of this going on I never saw one instance of road rage.

Best Shawarma in Amman: Shawarma Reem at the second circle(near the Intercontinental hotel) a small road side shop(used to be $1 when I was there in '98 )
Agree with the above suggestions. I would add the Dead Sea, for the experience.
Also Jerash could be interesting and there is a great Lebanese restaurant.

We used UK licences but we did have the photocards. Can't remember them being checked particularly carefully.
Watch out for unmarked 'speed bumps' in the middle of the motorway...

Not been but would love to go. I have a good friend from my naval days who has just retired from the Royal Jordanian Navy and he keeps asking me to come out to visit.
I understand that even given it's location, it is one of the best countries for tourism and indeed relies heavily on it. The few Jordanians that I have met were possibly the nicest and most generous people that I have met.Dave Neil
