Expedition as opposed to a flat dog one?
We use a Thule roof box with Thule roof bars. Do I have to remove a roof rack to use these?
Good point. I fit various things on top of the rack as it is a bind getting it off and on again - beacon bar, bike carrier, etc. What I use are roof bars (Halfords type 3) that fit to the top rails of the rack.
The basic rack does not have a floor, and one could fit things direct to the cross members, but I like the floor as one can stand on it, or stick a few deckchairs up there to make a spectating platform. The Type 3 is no longer available, but there are plenty others made to fit vehicles with sticky-up roof rails.
There is a lot of space on the rack to fit things on a permanent basis. I have a couple of flush mount LED floodlights to go on the sides before the dark days return.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. Bear in mind, roof mounted lighting can be liable to light up your bonnet and can cause glare - always best to mount on the grille before adding roof lights if necessary.

May not be relevant to you but I've avoided putting things on top of the car so I don't have issues getting in and out of car parks (including my own). Just mentioning in case you haven't considered it!
I have bumper mounted front lights and a rear work light attached to my ladder (again prob not relevant to you) so it is below the roof line.D3 SE with Hankook MT 275/65/R18, IID BT Tool, ProSpeed rock/tree sliders + compressor guard, RLD sump guard & winch tray + 13,000lb hidden winch, Gearbox guard, Frontrunner 80l aux tank with fuel gauge, V8 brake upgrade, Traxide USI-160 dual battery system, Frontrunner ladder, custom boot storage, Lazer LED driving lights, de-cat exhaust, Aftermarket Oro TPMS, i7 Mac Mini touch screen install (running Windows 10) mirrored on rear screens.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm an active deer stalker so the additional lights are for 1) distance at the front and 2) when I'm gralloching a beastie at the rear.

If you really want distance you would be better off with a good pair of lamps. A good light bar with reflector facing LEDs (e.g. PIAA/Lazer) can give some decent throw, if not as good as lamps, but beware that the basic Ebay type will not give extra distance (if anything, they shroud you in a bubble type effect).
My advice is to go for some good halogen or HID lamps with excellent throw (and bigger is better). Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

Uncle Ray (RLD on here) does some very nice aluminium brackets that mount onto the standard roof rails. While the supplied hole is rather small it can easily be reamed out to suit larger items.
These also fit to the cross member of an Expo rack, and he does a version with a bend to fit the side rails.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. Got it thx. Already have his spare wheel lock and imagine that I could use his sump guard.
With the extra lights, does it make sense to have them linked to a separate battery?

Just get yourself a decent head torch & do a suspended gralloch using your rope & a fence post - will work on anything up to & including fallow. Failing that get Kev to do it for you while you hold the torch D4 - Stornoway Grey
