I too have only recently discovoured Discoverys, wasn't a fan of the original but now see its reasoning as it is still true in the D3/4.
It is sad that LR appear to have missed the point and gone mainstream!
I really don't understand the rear door though, I love the split door as is and as said how on earth will it work in a car park unless it has a wind down glass wich is unlikely given the shape?
As for all LR products looking the same, it is not supprising given that lots of customers can't afford a RR but want to look like it? It has not done Porsche any harm?Series 1 V8

Oh dear. It's not what I hoped it would be. I bet it doesn't even have a curry hook.
I also drive the RRS2. You can stop the gate rising at any height by pressing the gate open button on the key fob. You have to duck to get at the loadspace but it works.
Here's a comparative pic of the RRS tail gate when fully open:

It seems there's not a lot of difference between those in-production designs and the D5 in terms of rise.
I bet the D5 is great to drive but I might wait and see what the new Deafener CSW looks like.MY91 110 CSW, so long ago I can barely remember it - sold

Ben will be along to explain his views on the lack of a fold down "viewing" platform later.

I'm sort of glad I don't really like it as it makes me feel better about my recent upgrade to an MY15 D4! I had been starting to regret it and was wishing I'd waited for the D5.
I don't know if it's the colour of that one or the tiny wheels but it really doesn't look great to me. The split tailgate is only a minor issue to me but the styling is a major one. All I can do is echo everyone else's comments about it looking the same as all the other LR models. I've a feeling it'll be a case of moving on to a performance estate car after I'm done with the D4. RS6 maybe?

I'd love to hear Clarkson's opinion of it. Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

You may well be right....my two border collies don't like the RRS for that very reason....they can't easily see out of the back window....
Don't want to upset you dog owning guys either over the design fault with the RRS type tailgate.... But where the tailgate lock closes onto the floor slam panel JLR use a little plastic folding flap which closes when the tailgate is up....it stops dirt and debris falling down around the catch....unfortunately this flap also takes off dogs claws.... Lots of stories on the RRS side of dogs losing claws and dew claws when caught in the flap....
Hopefully they have designed it out on the D5!

In fact thinking about it that's probably why that new little flap appears on the D5..... To cover the closing latch....
This is why you need a lower tailgate...
LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Woo hoo! Us D3 and D4 owners are going to be millionaires as people realise the D5 is just not as good and no split tailgate so their values will soar. Ferrari 250 GTO, forget it. It's the D3s and 4s that will set the high prices.
Probably.

Perhaps they need to 'design out' the D3/4 shape as it's ideal for the Defner replacement. I've always thought that having an open rear load space or crew cab version of a Disco would be a match for Toyota and Mitsi's. Dave
