Poverty Spec D5
Absolutely no one in their right mind is going to buy a 2lt Poverty Spec D5, so in effect, the range starts at £50k. Oh, I hate being so right.

Looking at the numbers I'd quite happily live with a 2.0l diesel version but after living with a HSE I couldn't go lower than an SE model. Just priced mine up at £55k! It's now very easy to justify spending extra money keeping the D3 on the road...2011 D4 SDV6 HSE

Fair point or if you don't need the extra space, a Disco Sport is looking good value.

Without being extravagant, I got to £48.5k with the toys I want/need
The 2.0 diesel is only 20bhp/100Nm less than the 3.0 diesel, and I expect most of that can be clawed back with a decent remap My D3 Build Thread

Why? I bought a poverty spec manual D3 S 11.5 years ago and have been very happy with it. I chose 'poverty' spec becuase I didn't want leather (I still don't like leather) and it had everything I wanted on it:
Xenons, heated seats, cruise control and decent stereo.
Its one of the reasons I've kept it so long.
Whilst the 2lt may not be everyones cup of tea, 240bhp and 500nm of torque puts the old V6 to shame.
My needs are changing, so I'm not sure if the D5 fits those needs, however, the lack of a split tail gate is an issue for me so we'll see.New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

Problem is that if you are coming from a D3/4 with the V6 in it which is part of that intangeable extra 'feel good' (permagrin) feeling when you are driving it, when you go to any 4 Cylinder powered you will know and feel that it drives differently regardless of the quoted power outputs and theeeeennn......???

With the Poverty Spec you get the shell and that's about it.
I know the cloth seats and other things are a personel choice, but looking at it on the configurator, you really don't get anything for the money. Basic stuff is all extra.
I think the lowest spec I could go would be the SE at roughly £50k in Poverty White.

It does, but a 2 litre lump is going to be working hard to deliver that with 3.5 ton on the back of it!

The world has changed since 2004's introduction of the D3.
Most large competing SUVs are now coming with 2.0 as the main engine - XC90 and X5 being the key targets. Large lumps are now targeted at those who really need them, the majority of the new car market (who really are the LR, BMW, Volvo etc target) will work away with the high performing 2.0 versions and money will be spent on spec rather than cc's. Fuel efficiency and environmental impact are now KPIs for most.
I love my D3 and all it does for me and family, and there is nothing I want to swap it with at the end of the markey I am in, however, if I could have one of these . . . in a heartbeat.
In reality, the new Discovery will out perform all previous models in almost every way. No, we will not see someone loading it up with bags of cement next week, no we will not see it being used for camping trips next month, no we will not see it pulling a small excavator on a trailer soon - but yes these things will happen in time. Just as they did when the D3 came along and blew the D2 away. Many people thought that would be too posh for real work . . .

I too was worried about the lack of the split tailgate HOWEVER looking at the way the ''inner'' tailgate works satisfies my needs and as a bonus you get a larger ''umbrella'' with the full tailgate.
First impressions of the brochure read-through are good but obviously the real test comes when one gets a real live D5 to try!LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF

I see the price for basic colours has gone up from £600 to £830. Over 30% - must be much more surface area I guess Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
