RTV Trials, anyone do them? Where to put extinguisher?
After a fun day doing a punch hunt i'm considering also putting the D3 through some RTV trials...
Regs state...
"With the exception of a Tyro trial, all vehicles must carry a fire extinguisher which holds a minimum of 1.75 litre AFFF foam that is operable from the drivers seat. For Tyro trials, the fitment of a fire extinguisher is recommended."
The million dollar question is where to mount it in the D3 thats not going to get in the way of driver/passenger on a daily basis or during competing but still be reachable from the drivers seat...

I would seriously think about doing an RTV in a D3, yes they aren't supposed to be damaging but I wouldn't put one though some of the courses we do in Defenders. Maybe go and watch one first??
They are very good at Tyros though, depends who else goes to them really as to the challenges of the courses.Joined the BMWX5 45e group

I guess it depends on the extend of the damage we are talking about? i'm not to worried about scratches and will even take minor dents (the car already has some so no biggie) but would rather not put any 'big damage' on the car as it's still a daily driver...
Maybe going to watch one first is a good idea, can have a camera/drone day out with the club maybe...
I've done some RTV's - good fun, though did dent the door once. Depends on club and their definition of non damaging. I didn't always do all the sections if I thought they were potentially damaging.
As for extinguisher - was in the boot. Rules may have changed.Mark.

The front and rear overhang will get you stuck and damaged, used to see D1 stuck this way all the time and they are much smaller than the D3/4
Did a few in my 90 and used to often drive the winch bumper into a wall of dirt to try and get over it, not always with success
The two very best drivers used a bog std 90 truck cab and a jimny.

We've just started doing Tyro's - we've picked up an old D1 to do it in (got it with a mate of mine so we split the costs). Having done a few sections in the D1, I wouldn't want to take my daily driver round - I could see front/rear bumpers getting dragged off.
I'd definitely have a look first - just go along & chat with a few of the members & marshals, if they're anything like Peak & Dukeries everyone's really friendly.

FE can mount on plastic panel on front lower edge of drivers (Or passenger) seat. It's tucked back far enough so as not to get in the way, yet is accessible.
There is an official Land Rover mount for this. Not sure if it's still available. I think the G4 D3's had them?

Recently done a Punch Hunt on a piece of land that is used for RTV's and apart from the really boggy muddy bits there isn't really anywhere else on side that i wouldn't (and didn't) take the D3, i'm not overly precious about it... I might have a MOT failure D2 coming my way cheap soon so we never know... Needs the rear chassis welding up but i can do that and may get a few years use out of it for not a lot of money... Doing the punch hunt had definitely got me bitten with the bug though...

I have done RTV's in the past in a D2, it was about ten years ago so then it was like using a 2009 D3 now
the Fire ex was mounted behind the centre "cubby" box between the two front seats, did not interfere with rear peeps unless 3 sat in the back and Anyone could then reach it if needed
You don't want to be upside down trying and to reach it
I would recommend Everyone to have a glass breaker/seat belt cutter within reach as well just in case
I did more damage (major scratchers only) green laning than I ever did on an RTV, but it is Nut that holds the wheel that decides when to Stop and take the previous gate number
Mentioned being upside down did an RTV and one guy using swmbo's school bus 90 had a red mist issue and rolled it, soft roll but still needed a big bunch of flowers to go home with
Give it a go but know when to say "I will take the 10" as said they are a very friendly bunch very helpful (afterwards !) and its a great day out.

When I was involved in Trials we had tested and in date extinguishers held at various points on each course.
We did not rely on each vehicle having one that would operate when required.
Over 30 odd years of trailing almost every other weekend we never had a fire. Stew,
2010 D4 gone but I really loved it
Went back to Merc - C350 AMG
The whole point of RTV's is that they are none damaging, though can never be ruled out.
Biggest problem with the D3 is the size, though when I did them in 2012, I won the class I was in that year. You can't get around some of the courses with out calling a shunt
I enjoyed the ones I did - apart from the eastnor one when I hit the door on a tree - never have fixed it.Mark.

Thanks for all your input, i think i'll probably give it a go next year, get christmas and new year out of the way first...
Like i say not overly worried about minor damage, already got ripples all down the passenger side and i have no intentions of either getting it repaired or passing the car on for a while...

A RTV should be set out so that the vehicles entering it should be capable of completing most of the sections without damage IF the correct driving line is taken.
We have a member who sometimes competes in a D4 and he is warned if we believe any part of a section is considered to be likely to cause damage from scratchy trees etc. If a member is unconfident about driving a part of a section they are advised to pull off the section at the relevant gate.
Fire extinguishers are not required to be carried inside the vehicle but are at the event if needed. However no vehicle fires have happened at any of our events.
