Tread Depths??

OK, a bit of a boring one, but what's the tread depth of a NEW Wrangler HP 255/60/18?
I just want to work out what the % wear per month is, but I don't know what the depth was.
Also what about the General AT2 (same size).

I'm going to have to replace the Wranglers on mine soon and I'm seriously confused Confused Confused Confused

Wrangler 8mm
AT2 13.5mm

If memory serves correctly at this time of night.

Either way, AT2's last longer & get stuck less - and can usually be had for less £

England

dont forget to deduct the 1.6mm legal minimum, or even the 3mm (EU minumum) depth at which the noise from the goodyears will drive you mad. Thumbs Up

With mine approaching my personal throw away limit of just below 4mm that means I will be chucking a set of "half worn" tyres in the near future. On that basis alone I guess its going to be AT2s next time around, given that they are comparable on price, but listening to the conversations sound a good bet. (But I'd much rather have BFG ATs, but they aren't available in the UK in a 255/60/18 just now).
I don't trust 2.7tonnes of vehilce at speed with only a couple of mm of tread -I've been there and have the tee-shirt and don't want to wear it again.

Pirellis are between 8.5 and 9mm when new, but if you deduct 2+mm for safety that leaves 7mm and I have found that they only last 15,000 miles so that makes 2,000 miles per mm of useable tread depth Shocked (or every 1,000 miles uses up 7% of their lifespan!! (or to put it another way, diesel may cost 20p per mile, but the tyres alone add another 5p per mile to that Shocked )

Much the same sort of argument goes through my mind with the Goodyears, and the sums work out much the same (depending where I can get them from), but the AT2s with the best part of double the useable tread cost about 2.5p/mile if they wear at the same rate in terms of miles per mm.
I have a personal distrust of Pirellis ever since I had an "interesting moment in a A40 on Cint's Whistle then years later two blowouts on the rear of my P38 within a week (both due to sidewall manufacturing faults (tyres were only two and three weeks old when they let go, and dealer replaced them all for nothing with BFG ATs which lasted years)

Other factor to consider though is the use they are to be put to. AT2's may be great for off-road, BUT their braking distance, and indeed traction, on a tarmac roadway or even compacted snow (as opposed to soft new snow) may not match that of a Goodyear or Pirelli which has been designed with a road bias Very Happy

Just to back that up my Cooper ST's definitely DON'T have the same on-road manners as the P Zeros - managed to provoke what felt like a four wheel jitter (followed quite closely by a sph***ter jitter) quite easily in the damp last week entering a roundabout over a camber

Tyre wear slows down

Just pedantic, but as tread decreases so does flex, and there should be a modest reduction in rate of wear as the tread diminishes. This shoulld mean that you get more miles from the last 4 mm than the first 4 mm- say. The reverse also explains why the first few mm just disappear very quickly. Whistle

Never bother checking tread depths - the sidewalls wear out first on mine Wink

Is that because you won't pay Kwik Fit prices to fit the tyre in the first place 10?
Just go for a leisurely drive, whilst fitting the tyre.... Laughing
