Just acquired a new set of wheels and tyres (Goodyears on 17") for my D3. Original set (Continentals) worn out after 16,000 miles. Not helped by wearing badly on the insides of the front tyres, though the rears aren't bad. They were wearing evenly until a few thousand miles ago. Anyway...
My question is this: Is it recommended that I get the tracking reset by a Main Dealer or would I be better off going elsewhere?

I go "else where" my self as My main dealer does not have the equipment or knowledge to do the job.
Thats is to say they are a workshop ok but dont have the proper laser tracking system to do proper
setups on geometry.
A good tyre depot would be my choice DWillerton unless your dealer has a good setup.
from what i have seen before if you bring your Disco to a dealer from bodywork or tyres/tracking.
Once your gone they drive it round the corner to the local body shop or Quick-fit and get them to
do the work , once done they collect your Disco , bring it back to their Garage .. give you a call to
tell you its ready along with a Bill ... say 20% more than what you would have paid if you went
direct to quick-fit.
Just my view ...

Your dealer needs to do a geometry set before the alignment is done. The actual alignment can be done with the right gear by a good tre place.
If they don't do the re-set it may not be sset right.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Gogsy , Advance in Clommel or Daly tyes in Limerick (eastway)

Bearing this in mind, does the wear on my tyres look to be 'within manufacturers accepted tolerances' or does the vehicle's geometry need resetting?

They look well scrubbed.
As I said I think you should get the re-set done.
Someone else on the site got the re-set donr then went to another alignment place and it was more than the dealer to do the lot.
Most dealers outsource the actual alignment anyway, just get a price from stealer more both and just geometry re-set as well as tyre mob. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
