Just done a double flush on my 06 Auto with 201000 miles on it, i got the box warm and then dropped the oil i only got 2.5L out and very dark but no burnt smell, i then filled until oil came out of the filler i then started the car ran through the gears and started topping up and at around 40 deg the oil started to drip out of the filler i then put the plug back in and went for a good drive all was good.
I re drained the oil and it was much nicer looking and did a re fill i only in the end got 6L out in total for both drains ? i re filled and went through the gears again and topped up and at around 40 deg oil dripped out of the fill plug.
Went for a drive all very good, im just concerned i only got 6L out for both flushes and got 10L back in durning the double flush.

I'm keen to keep an eye on your findings from this oil change as I intend to change mine very soon, using the German oil off e-bay.I can't seem to find any opinions, as to whether I should also change the filter at the same time...it has done about 56000 miles so far.Discovery 4 HSE SDV6

I didnt use the german stuff in the end i got 20L titan atf delivered for £85 so im covered for another flush, findings so far are positive the car now kickdowns realy well and doesnt get stuck in any gears i still have a small shudder but much better so i think another flush should helpRange Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8 what a car

Don't really need to change the filter at 50K.
I watched a youtube video of a jag with the same millage. His filter was clean.
However, if you intend to keep the car a long time and don't do much millage yourself, now might me a sensible time to change rather than later?
It's not really the right time of year to be changing the filter (unless you have a nice garage)

Thanks for your input Peter, I do intend keeping the car for a while, so now could be a good time to change the filter.

If you do change it, you need a metal sump really with sperate filter as the cross member is in the way and the old one needs cutting off
A lot of expense and potential for leaks for little gained at that mileage.

If I can, I would prefer to engage in preventative maintainence rather than fire fighting further down the line.While I agree £80 is a hefty amount for a filter and the other sundries in the kit , plus the oil....I believe that if it is going to elongate the life of my gearbox it is money well spent?? and hopefully will turn out to be a saving in the longer term.

Mine sweats a little from the joint but doesnt drop any oil, I was told I did well to not get any leaks which made me smile as I literally slapped the thing back up tightened the bolts my normal way ie no torque wrench and er thats it.
Dont forget its not a filter as per an engine oil or diesel filter its more of a chunk removal device.

The plastic filter is pretty good in that when torqued incorrectly it is rare to leak and if it does then correct torquing will fix it. The metal one needs to be fitted correctly. If bodged it can be a struggle to stop it leaking.
Whilst it cuts-across the received wisdom of the forum I don't think the metal filter is a good idea on the D3/D4 and (for once) I think JLR made the right choice going with the plastic. The filter can be left in place for 150k with ease so it's not a regular item and the metal one is too flimsy for my liking.
As ever, when it comes to the ATF - change early, change often.

Not impressed with the videi, all the oil can't be changed, well we know thats not true of a D3, oil was marginally darker than new, mine was black! Clean filter comments I can believe as I was told they are limited function anyway?Series 1 V8

If your oil is black then you have left it in for far too long. The torque converter really does hold onto half the oil, so only around half wlll come out via the drain plug.Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948

You won't be impressed with the video of a new D3 owner then!
In fairness to him, his oil was clean, which I can believe at that mileage.
How not to do it:
1. Don't use red gearbox oil
2. Check the level when the engine is running.
He's no good at fitting oil filters either.

I got 3.8 litres out of mine first time I drained it and it took 4.1 to refill.
I got 4.1 litres out the second time, and 4.1 to refill again
