I used to run 275/45R20 Wintrac 4 Extreme's on my old D4 all year round. I liked them simply because the ride felt better and the wheels were slightly more protected from kerbing. The wider look is very subtle... I liked it but I can't say anyone else would notice!

they are for my old mans car, he just wants a winter tire mainly and if they are better in mud bonus, but doesnt want extra road noise.
so i think i've ended up at the gg at3, in a 275/45/20.

No... quite the reverse. I was getting about 40k from each set (I had three sets over the life of the car) compared to about 15k on the original Scorpions. Most of my driving was long motorway trips but much of it in Europe, so needed the spec in Winter.
I loved them but you should be aware of two issues: 1) They are rubbish on mud or wet grass 2) When they get near the end of their life they seriously start to aquaplane on anything damp. For 38k+ they are fine in the wet, but at this point you need to change them quickly !!!
