Winter Tyres on

Put my Winter tyres on today, Conti Cross Contact, set of 4 on 19" HSE wheels. Bought from a forum member earlier this year.

Drives great on the 19's and winter tyres are always quieter than summer tyres.

18" SE wheels and Pirelli Scorpions going into storage. Might swap the Conti's for all season tyre next year.

The thing is, mild winter or not, winter tyres are brilliant on the wet and slimy roads of Norfolk (and elsewhere!). There is so much mud/clay on the roads at the moment, because of the sugar beet harvest. The Contis feel sure footed in all conditions. Thumbs Up

Always recommended, when I lived in Germany, to use winter tyres below 7C.

I have had two sets of these. The first set I bought just before a shocking winter in Germany about 48h before very heavy snows. The week before it had snowed quite heavily also and that day I changed from Scorpions to General Grabbers. I had an airfield to play on. Much fun! First the difference between worn Scorpions and GG was huge. The Pirellis were worthless with about 3-4mm on them. Lots of fun to play with, however. The new Grabbers were vastly better, but the cars could be put into a slide quite easily at speed in snow. A day or two later I put on the Contis (because the law said I had to) and the difference was night and day. It was my first real experience of driving on proper winter tyres. No kidding, I couldn't make the LR loose traction in the snow and ice setting. They were fantastic. The additional safety one gets from these things is fabulous. There's a reason that ze Germans mandate them in ze Vinter.

People don't see the need for them in this country until they try them in the conditions that they were designed for. They are fantastic. I will always have a set for my cars after living in Germany for a few years. It may seem like a waste of money but you double the life of your summer tyres too so in the end the only extra cost is a set of rims!

Snow forecast overnight tomorrow for the Pennines. I'll leave the X5 in the garage cos it's a heap of Censored in bad weather.

I'm thinking about getting some winter tyres. There's plenty of advice on here re: the tyre choice, but what about the rims? Do people tend to buy new, look out for second hand? I'm not that worried about the style, but are second hand rims a sensible buy, safety and economy-wise?

I bought the HSE rims with winter tyres on from a forum member. Yes, by all means buy used wheels, but be sure you know what you are buying. I personally would not buy a set of wheels without seeing them first.

As some snow was being forecast (although highly unlikely) just dropped my winters on. Actually quite surprised at how much quieter my 19" wintracs are compared to the 20" Scorpions on my (old) summer rims. Will need to see if the Scorpion Verdes on the 21's I have for next summer are any different.

Put mine on last week end, have an issue with the sensor on the near side front to sort, but now their fitted we should be in for a mild winter.
