Disco alternative???!
I'm not sure there is one for what I want/need but would welcome suggestions as may have to change cars at some point.
Disco is ideal for being able to tow comfortably a twin-axle van, carry three teenagers in equal sized rear seats and swallow all the stuff we take with us.
But - it is expensive to run and TBH has more capability than we'll ever use.
Our Disco is 10 plate and has done 107k miles but seems to be having a mid-life crisis of things go wrong and the repairs add up. Hopefully is now fine, but am thinking if something else goes wrong it may be time to change.
Discos in 3-4 yr age group seem to be stupid money now - the Tourags, Hyundai etc don't have boot space or three proper seats in middle. The closest I've seen is a Shogun - test drove one which had all the toys but was a harsh ride IMV.
Do I even have a choice

Often think the same.
Ours is a 2008 with 90k on the clock, but has been relatively well behaved so far.
That said its getting on a bit and at some stage I will need to replace it, and there's not much else will tow a TA with as much aplomb
I occasionally look at the big estates, Merc C350, E350 and Audi A6 which would probably just about do the job, but with nowhere near as much 'in reserve if you know what I mean.
I swallows all the kit and purrs along without issue, not sure a 'car' no matter how capable will ever do it as well.

I also keep looking at big estates , and the Audi A6 Allroad is the only one that makes sense to me.
But not sure that the difference in running costs and the cost the swap really make it worth swapping.Andy.

I nearly got a Allroad after my D4, but my friend has one and its late 20's to gallon, early 30's, not cheap to service either. 40 grand plus new too.... Lovely to drive tho.
You have hit the nail on the head, running costs too similar to warrant changing.2023 Ineos Grenadier 3.0 Diesel Commercial

I'm very interested in the new Volvo V90 Cross County, but it just doesn't have that something extra the Discovery has, well before that new thing.Andy

The running costs for the allroad seem quite hight to me, wifes last A4 3.0tdi quattro 35/40 mpg pretty much all the time and once hit 53 mpg after to many miles in 50 mph roadworks, went like a scalded cat, her newer A6 3.0 tdi quattro is even quicker and more responsive and she seems to be getting pretty much the same mpg.
Havent a clue what they are like for towing mind but with the power and grip on tap cant see why they wouldnt do the job well, the grip around wet corners is pretty amazing, sadly I reckon they are like driving go-karts!
The audi car forums are pretty much like wastelands though
Think we've all had this issue before I got shut of my 6th LR a TD5 disco
Here's the thoughts I had
XC90.... I'm to young
Big Audi Q7.... more issues than a D3
Pathfinder..... .Did drive nice but lacked class
RRS ......I'm to young again
Kia Sorrento .....not for me
Mercedes estate ....don't play golf
BMW 330 estate .....Mmmmm
D3 .....Drove it bought after vowing never to have one as LR have lost the plot
Should have done it years ago

OP tows a large TA caravan. Outback probably not enough kerb weight and 1800kgs towing capacity probably too near the line depending on the OP's loaded caravan weight.

I probably won't be ready to change for another 18 months but its a question I'm already pondering. Current caravan has an MTPLM of 2000kg so it may also have to be a case of changing the van for something a bit lighter.
I love the latest A6 Allroad biTDi and wow can that thing fly. But it would be right on the edge weight wise and towball limit wise.
I also have a real fear that in a couple of years time anything with a big diesel engine will simply be seen as a complete dinosaur.
As it stands, if I were to change today, it would be XC90 T8 petrol/electric hybrid for me.

Would be interested to know which one that was as I've asked a number of people and they all report late 30s mpg or low 40s mpg if being careful.

Some friends wanted 4x4, due to the access to their new home. He was adamant that they wouldn't buy an SUV and didn't need a proper off roader.
They first tested the Audi A6 All Road, but found the ride too harsh. Next they drove the Vovo XC70, this was over a year or so ago BTW. They preferred the ride of the Volvo, but weren't so keen on the exterior styling. Whilst at the Volvo dealership, the wife spotted an XC60, which they now own.
Whilst quite old now, the Merc R Class was a cracking used buy last time I looked.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE
