D5 looks like a Shogun. Shame it's lost it's distinctive Discovery shape with the roof higher in the back with good vision out for all. I think LR will regret the making the D5 so much like all the cheaper offerings. May as well just buy a Shogun? Discuss?? MG

There is also a stepped roof in the D5, keep up at the back there!

1) trip to specsavers, looks like a shogun, really?
2) step roof still there, just not as prominent.
3) still has stadium seat, good vision for all.
4) still has a practical loadspace

I'd struggle to call it stadium seating. Have you sat in row two? Not sure you're any higher than the front seats. It felt very claustrophobic in the back for me... and even worse in row three!

Yes sat in row two, but the view ahead was ok to me, the only thing I didn't like was the black headlining that gave the feeling of claustrophobia, never liked black headlining. 3rd row yes felt like a prison and the smaller windows didn't help but the view ahead was ok.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

The need to consult the correct counterfactual with regard to superlatives is still not sinking in though - there is a difference between something that is good or successful and perfect or best. I don't think it looks like a Shogun, nor do I think it looks like a Discovery. To me it looks like a RRS and the DS, particularly from the side.
I don't mind how it looks, although I'm not keen on the rear. I still prefer the D4 and even more so the D3 though.

Whatever the pro and cons of the D5, the Shogun doesn't come close to the D4. The Shogun isn't a bad vehicle but it is still a traditional 4x4. I drive them at work and colleagues are bored of my "if only we had a Disco". Performance, handling, practicality are all areas the Shogun doesn't match a Discovery. For all its "issues" the D5 will be far better than the Shogun. Apart from looks Tony

I'm getting a D5 because (in no particular order) drum roll :
3. The off roading that I do is mainly for collecting my logs with the trailer, parking at Point to Point and for dogging in and shoot maintenance in the summer, so damage to the super rounded body is not a problem.
I was planning on posting a helpful pictorial guide to show the difference between dogging-in and dogging in.
Unfortunately my wife walked in as I hit enter in the Google image search. Has anyone got a spare bed for next week? I won't need it for the next couple of nights as this hospital bed is very comfy and the soup is delicious.
