Unusual readings from leisure battery.

This afternoon I removed the leisure battery from the caravan. The display on the CEC system in the van was showing 13.8 volts shows this most of time other than when having used the motor mover. Switched everything off and disconnected the battery. Took it into the garage and read the voltage with the multimeter 16.29 volts . About 6 hours later, i.e this evening it read 18.8 volts I checked the multimeter on SWMBO's mini and multimeter was showing 14.4v. So I assume meter is OK . Any ideas on these weird readings? I will obviously check again in the morning if it has not gone bang!

To me that's a meter problem unless the battery is heating up a lot.

A nominal 12v battery in quiescent mode might, just might show 13v but 18.8v is difficult to visualise as that's 150% of nominal.

14.4v on the Mini - I assume engine off as you don't say, is far too high too.
 Stew,

Assumptions that the multi meter was wrong proved to be correct. Borrowed neighbour's meter all normal readings. Changed internal battery on my multimeter and all now OK. My multimeter did not come from a Christmas cracker but is probably 40 years old. Thanks for all the comments.
