Removing Gear shift.
Having exhausted all other avenues as to why sports mode/command shift isn't working, thought I would whip the shift out and check all the connections etc. Question workshop manual says you need to get underneath and remove the cable from the gearbox end first, is this in fact the case or?==================================

It may be that the gear shift cable/lever need adjusting and therefore you should follow the manual.
Before you start it would be a good idea to get underneath and check the condition of the gear shift lever where the shift cable attaches. It's a common problem for this link to corrode and seize, then the gears won't operate at their optimum (of course there can be other reasons for the gears not to function well). Again follow the manual, disconnect the cable, remove the lever, fit new lever and then adjust the cable.
When I replaced my lever I found that the cable had at some time not been refitted properly causing further resistance in addition to the rusted lever.
As for fully removing the cable, yes you must remove it fully in order to remove and fit a new shift lever, but it's not to difficult to do.
