Thetord Forest area for a novice

Can anyone suggest any green lanes around Thetford Forest for a novice who want to go for ride over Christmas?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Plenty in the area and an ideal place to start as a novice. Probably got GPX file with tracks on, but are you running any GPS?

loads!

I led a day a couple of years ago that followed an LRO route. The lanes near Euston, Knetishall and North of Thetford are all fine, one lane over near Lakenheath station is a bit over grown.

I will PM you a link to the route.

Please don't play off piste as some have in a few areas and it gets us all a bad reputation. Please check the council website for any temporary TRO. Note the route should avoid the winter TRO that are in place around the area, but worth double checking as it's a couple of years since I did the whole lot, but Ines mentioned above are fine all the time.

You need to fill your profile in so we know what you've got. Also, when you know when you are out and about put a shout out on here. Always best to have two people.

I would come, my parents only live down the road but bit busy this Christmas.

Give me a shout too if your meeting up around there.

I went on the day organised by Mr.Tom but unfortunately got a puncture half way around. Once the spare was gone made the decision to head home in case got a second.

Me too. I quite fancy having a run around that area, been studying Mr Tom's maps, just never had the courage to do it alone.

Maybe we should make a 'play date'

I was thinking about another session, but the misses is due to go into labour in the next week or so, so will have to wait till the summer.

If you want to go and do some really benign ones, then Knetishall through to Euston and then up passed Barningham are fine, very sandy.

If you then turn left down the main road and turn right into the next lane, this is a wide sandy / stony farm track to start with and then this turns to the left (really obvious) it's a bit rutted which you can drive through but there is plenty of space to go round these.

You then head through Farm and field onto the main road.

You can then do icknield way, but it was a bit rutted last time I looked at the bottom end and would recommend giving it a miss until drier weather (to prevent damage).

I drive these ones on my own, so you should be fine. Nothing to get stuck in, take a bit of board and a jack as the only risk is puncture from flint (rare).

The lanes North of Thetford are also really wide and sandy.

Some pictures http://disco4.com/forum/topic125084.html?h...p;start=90

From the previous trip. A lot of the pics are from early on so you can see how wide it is, you can also see how where it's rutted there is space to go around.

If you head out - let us know how you get on.

A few of us from the G4oc had a day out on the 29th. Went from Swaffham up to Wells. 60 miles of which 40 or so were off road.
We were going to do the forest. But fancied fish and chip by the coast.... So did the Pedders Way instead. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

United Kingdom

There have been many recent reports coming back of heavy deterioration of the some of the lanes in Thetford with emergency TRO's being put in place on two of the main lanes as of last week.

Also looking at recent comments on trailwise, another of the lanes popular on the western side of the town has become bad to the point that what was once puddles that could only have been a few inches deep are now bumper deep on lifted D1's.

I'm doing a Recce there tomorrow to check some of the lanes out for a trip i've organised on Sunday.

Please please check legality of lanes before you drive them, these days legality changes so frequently that one really can't afford to be following a route that is even a few months old, let alone years.
