Recommend a bike carrier

Hi all

Sorting myself out a roof mounted carrier system for when we are away.

What carriers do everyone recommend when using the LR roof bars? Been looking at thule 591 & 598 on ebay but wondered if i should look at any others? I understand these two use a t system?

Thanks

Jack Thumbs Up

Thanks Simon, they do seem to be most common. Trying to track some down on eBay but not having much luck.

I bought 3x 598 proride from ebay a few months ago. The ebay shop is actually a car parts in Aberdeen and the warehouse was local to me so quick delivery.

They were the cheapest I could find brand new and more importantly they came with matching lock sets that you change yourself, then you only have one key to lock or open all three bike racks....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-x-THULE-598-PR...SwEjFXc9yt

The t bar slots straight in to my roof rails on both the audi and Disco...

Cheers

I have 2 Thule 591 for our mountain bikes and 2 561 for the road bikes. Both great, work well with the standard LR bars. Used them loads, no complaints. You do need side steps or a small step to get them up there though.

Good point about having all the same key but you can get a brand new 591 for just under £60

I looked at changing the locks on the 4 I have to the same number and it was going to cost a fortune as I also have the altera strada for the tow bar and that has 5 locks

Ok so my racks etc have arrived and my initial plan was to keep the carriers on the racks and keep it as a whole unit I could slide on and off but this doesn't seem possible as the racks alone are quite stiff on the rails.

Is it possible to keep it all built and slide it on or is it a job of building it in situ?

thanks

Has to be built in situ. The roof rails on the car aren't parallel, they narrow slightly towards the rear, so you can't slide the cross bars in if anything is attached to them that fixes the widths between them.

Having said that you have loosened the feet on the cross bars first with the little hex bolt on each foot, if you haven't that will make it doubly difficult?

Just out of interest, how come you are excluding the towbar mounted options including the MaxxRaxx one that you can tow with when fitted?

I find it so much easier to handle the bikes than getting them on top of the car and I'm 6'1" plus there's the aero/noise benefit (don't laugh)!

For me with a large, heavy caravan I think I'd be worrying close to the nose weight limit of the tow bar with two heavy mountain bikes and the van attached. Tow bar carriers count towards the max hitch weight limit (150kg on D3/4 I think?).

Sorry DT, just seen this. First thing I did was looosen that screw, still haven't got round to building the whole system but at least I know won't try and remove in one piece.

Similar reasons to discoteca, plus a lot of a favourite sites are quite tight to back onto and I don't have a mover and didn't want to fart about getting rid of bikes before pitching. I haven't tried getting them up yet but I should be ok. Certainly not too bothered about aero benefit towing an 8m 1600kg tin tent lol Thumbs Up

Tie or strap the front wheel to the frame - makes it a lot easier to lift when the wheel isn't moving about

I used to use Thule cross bars and 4 Thule bike racks, they were left mounted o the cross bars all the time, a bit heavy to lift off but worked a treat.
