need to top up the auto box after fixing a leak what is the actual procedure, do I start the car when cold, remove filler plug and add fluid then wait until 40 deg then what, what happens if oil comes out at 30 deg I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I cant get my head around filling with cold until it runs out at 40 deg, having one of those daysRange Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8 what a car

Yes you've got the procedure correct. Oil will be spilling all the way up to 40oC, Stu

At 40oC refit the plug, it will still be dribbling as the temp rises.Stu

I think its the opposite.
With hot oil the level is higher.
I think the ideal procedure is to take the car for a VERY short drive (round the block!).
Ideally you monitor the gearbox oil temp to be in a range, but if you don't have one of these, look for when the coolant temp gauge has just moved off the bottom onto the first mark.
(waits for abuse about using the coolant gauge, but 2 of us have found it a good coloration)
With engine running, remove level plug and if oil does not come out add oil until it does.
Fit plug and turn engine off.
The box has been weeping oil for a while now so I cleaned everything and re sealed the bolts holding the pan on as the oil was weeping past these, car was level and the oil 22 deg shown on IID I started ran through the gears and got underneath car, removed filler plug and started pumping new oil in, I got less than 100ml and at exactly 30deg the oil started to flow out, this got faster the hotter, I am now totally confused I was expecting to put more that 100ml in should I have let it run until 40degRange Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8 what a car

Ideally you should have left it until 40oC, the level will be a tad high at the moment.Stu

may get shot for this, , but would one of those infrared temp gauges be any good
always thought that u had to wait until it was at 40c , then opened the level plug, filling up or allowing oil to drip out as req
assume it has to be at 40c to allow the oil to expand
but far more experienced people will be along

temp should be between 30 and 50c according to LR i like it about 35/36 open fill plug and fill till spill then replace plug all done very temp critical as the fluid will expand at higher temp
