TDV6 3.0L Engine Oil

Dear all,

Engine oil.

Often discussed topic, covered many times, but this is a new one for me.

Reviewing my last service paperwork, back January, it details that the oil change was with Castrol Edge 5W-30 A5

Now my LR handbook says WSS-M2C934-B, but ACEA 5W-30 C2 at a push.

Question I have, if they have used A5 oil instead of C2, anyone got an idea of the impact on the engine?

Just got back from a drive down to Marrakech, and due to have a meeting with the service manager at my local LR about absolutely crap vehicle prep carried out by them just 2 weeks before the trip.

Many thanks

Andy

Any effects would be on your DPF I believe as the A5 is not a low ash oil. In the short term probably ok but get it changed for C1 or C2 soon.

It all depends on if the vehicle in question has a DPF or not. A5 should not be used if you have a DPF.

Thanks both

Should have said it has a DPF, which is where I’m concerned.

I live in an area where the max speed limit is 50 km /h, and the longest stretch is about 1.5 km, and to do anything greater than that requires relocating to another country.

In the last 9 months I’ve had two ‘DPF full’ alerts, and needed to travel abroad to clear them.

Just picked up on this in last couple of weeks due to other issues.

Certainly isn’t if it’s being run on the wrong spec oil, but surely a local garage should know that and not use it.

Sounds like your mechanic owes you a new DPF.

DPFs can be removed and car told to ignore, yes. Local legislation may or may not allow it though.

Stick it in low range for the odd journey, it could save you a trip abroad Thumbs Up

Isn’t there a facility on the Iid tool to burn it off?- I don’t know how it works as fortunately I have never had this situation and I have been doing a lot of short journeys in the last two years, might be worthwhile investing in one.
There’s no question about it running on the wrong spec oil will cause the DPF to block faster and although LR do say it can be used, but only in an emergency when the correct oil is not available, this model engine is designed to run on C1, although IMHO there are a lot of engines out there running on the wrong spec oil mainly due to cost or ignorance, after all if a third party is changing the oil who knows what is put in?

All the other occasions, they’ve used the Magnatec C1 WSS-M2c934-B stuff

Guessing this time they thought it was non-DPF

But tbh, a little Censored at them following a diagnostic check three weeks ago to check for a high pitched whine from auxilliary drive/timing belt. Diagnosis came back ‘viscous fan coupling’

So off to Morocco we went, driving to Marrakech.

First round about off the ferry, horn wouldn’t work - disconnected from behinf the front grill

Half way down, realised not the usual power and a slight ‘hiss’ - Vacuum hose for 2nd turbo disconnected.

Also noted that the throttle body wasn’t on correctly, and the fan has very slightly ‘notched where tis been striking it.

Then noticed misting at the back of the engine where a cable routing has been left loose - found the oil separator crankcase breather hose on the left was fractured at the T-piece; gouge outthe broken bit, trim and reconnect and electrical tape to hold it together…

The cables routed on top of the fan shroud were routed under the shroud.

Get it into an LR indy in Marrakech as whine a bit worse, and find the pulley idler bearings for the aux drive belt are rough. Plus its loose having been mis-aligned, causing wear in the locating pin, so ‘clicks’ when being put under load.

Extra stress cause spring in tensioner to fail when replacing belt.

Oh, and the alternator decided to fail literally the day before the day before we were due to drive back.

Also managed to sort out an exhaust rattle that LR had attributed to corroded baffles in the mid-section silencer; quoted £1600 to fix - new mid section, both rear pipes and connection clamps and finishers.

Found it was due to a failed weld between right hand rear pipe join to mid-section, and you could easily see a black bloom from where it had been leaking.

The guy welded it for nothing in less than 5 minutes.

There’s even a TSB for this! (LTB00568NAS1)

So all in all, not impressed with LR, and meeting with the service manager tomorrow so we can go through things.
