Whirring noise

My disco 3 has developed a kind of whirring/bearing/gear noise and only at slower speeds when slowing down or going down a hill, (sounds like the car has town and county chunky tyres on it) it's fine when driving at normal speeds. I have tried slipping it into neutral when the noise is evident but it continues to make the noise. The car has nearly new good year wranglers fitted, noise started around a week ago.
I was thinking wheel bearing, front diff or possibly the gearbox Shocked
Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

Wullie.

Just had mine diagnosed as bearing , same symptoms , try steering to one side see if it stops , could be both though so might not make it a clear diagnosis Smile
Mine stops when I turn into the road center , noisiest around 30 -40

WD to the rescue on mune Smile

Thanks for the reply Deanos-Beano, yeh if steering to right centre of road noise more or less disappears but steering to the left towards the kerb noise stay's so not sure what sides or if it's the oil in the diff moving about changing the noise level ?
both front & rear diff's, transfer box and auto box oils were changed Dec 2014.

If it disappears when turning right but remains present when turning left then there is a good chance that it is the right hand side front wheel bearing. Not a particularly difficult job to do, just make sure you get a Timken bearing from someone like Advanced Factors, as these are the OEM bearings, the cheaper copies last about 5 minutes.

Well new hub/bearing fitted today road test no difference still growling away, it still sounds as if it's the drivers front it's coming from. Got the wife to drive I sat in the back third row no noise from the back.
Again when driving along at around 31 MPH and with no traffic around steer to the right less to no noise but steer to the left noise is louder Banging Head. Could it just be the n/side?
Can the front differential unit cause the same symptoms as above?? anybody help please.

I changed the oils in both diff's, transfer box, and Disco Mikey flushed the gearbox around 11/2 yrs ago, I also drained the front diff again just to check for metal particles when I first heard the noise about 4 weeks ago, the oil was still clean with no metal particles.

Anybody help please.

Wullie.

Update on noise from front end, I replaced the front drivers side wheel bearing assembly thinking that was the problem, didn't work still the same so I left it a while until it got worse and it did, I could now feel it through the steering and the floor. Time to do the passenger side wheel bearing, ordered a Bearmach bearing £73 including postage came next day so done job this afternoon, once I had the assembly off the car I could hear and feel the bearing thank **** found the problem, fitted new assembly BINGO road test silence at last. So glad it wasn't the diff.
Tomorrow I am changing auto box sump pan for the steel one which has the new separate filter, I have the loan of a 4 poster ramp which will make it a wee bit easier.

A big thanks to all the guy's for all their posts on this forum it is truly the best forum. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
