I don't know the rules however there is a LHD SCV6 petrol D4 for sale locally on a 14 plate and that engine option wasn't available in the UK either so maybe a glimmer of hope.

Yes you can import any vehicle that was not homologated for UK highway use. You will need to get a shipper, and pay the import duty once its landed.
Then, you will be able to retrieve the vehicle from the dock and trailer it to your home.
By making sure that everything is current with the ruling for vehicles used on the public highway (lights and reflectors correct, horn and most importantly gas analyser test etc) you will be able to book it for a SVA test.
These are around £80 iirc
Once passed (and no reason it shouldnt, basically its a LR sold here in the UK with a slight different engine and LHD i presume) then you can register it and use it as a normal Uk vehicle.
Done a few of them now, its no major headache on vehicles that are 99% same as Uk market vehicles.
When you get to the true grey imports things begin to get harder!

If you have owned it more than 6 months abroad it will tax free as well.

Can you import a US spec D4 5.0 V8 even if the steering is on the left?

Yes safari Dave, the only vehicles that you are NOT allowed to import are those from prohibited states IE North Korea.
We imorted both our Chevrolet and our COE with ease, however, since 2010 the cost for import has risen threefold.
Again any LhD US spec vehicle will need to have the rear light clusters changed, some wiring for fog lights and such and an SVA.

Thank you all for your replies to my post. I appreciate you taking the time. It seems to be good news and should be possible to bring our LR3 home to the U.K. I think we will just have to go through the procedure and make the vehicle compliant for the U.K. Which should be fairly straightforward. We love our LR3 and maybe we'll drive it back via Iran and Turkey. Will keep the forum posted!

You would need to have lots of paperwork back it up as the vin nos will be all wrong , would also be an issue if you try to sellAndy.

I dont think this is a viable option at all.
As stated already, vin numbers between the body and chassis will be completely different, and invoke a full investigative report before registeration,
Not only that, but the LHD set up would cause issues with the steering swap, needing to change out a lot of components to make it work.
When you consider the only things NEEDING to be changed for the UK highway on an American spec vehicle is the rear light clusters to allow brake lights and separate indictors, a third brake light if not fitted (some us models dont have them) a Fog light and illuminated indicator in cabin, and reset of the headlamp aim. (Sometimes new headlamps)
But that is WAY WAY WAY cheaper and easier and more legal than the route youre proposing there.
