A/C not working and also a whinny noise.

Ok so it started with a whiny noise slight purring sound when heating or ac is on and also ac was not working. then i thought refrigerant needed to be topped up so i got it topped up. but within a year no a/c again. any help?

more like a chirp. something tells me its all linked. i am sure other ppl have also had this problem.

Quick and dirty and illegal check on a/c systems is to remove one of the plastic charging caps get a piece of rag and a screwdriver, wrap the rag around the charge point and poke the little valve in the centre the rag is to stop you potentially getting a face full of gas/oil, what you want to hear is a good puff of air just like when pumping a tyre up, if its a bit limp you most likely have a leak.

The system might need pressurising with nitrogen to find the leak along with a squirty bottle of soapy water.

Mine (USA) 08 LR3 would whine when the A/C was running and finally gave out in December of 2016, at the very same time my front wheel bearings bit the dust as well. The A/C smelled like something had burned when air was running via the vents. But, I noticed when the A/C was running the whine was gone and the smell told me it was toast...

Yes and it had a burnt smell coming from the vents.
