Autobox filter change, lifting engine? |

I need to change the autobox oil on my old mans car and have been reading all the posts on doing this myself.
It seems people have had a few leaks if they change to a metal sump and removable filter.
I get the impression a new standard plastic one is the way to go however the land rover method says i need to raise the engine. It doesnt say the best way to do this, im assuming jacking under the sump is a no no. Any advice?
(I have tried searching every different variation of jacking the engine i can think of and cant find this covered before )

Besides several HowTo' son here, you'll find a shorter thread regarding the Metal pan.
Just did that for the first Time. And I'm Not Even sure, if it would have been possible to for the Plastik pan on in. Because dont forget: You have to cut the snorkel of the Filter, to get it out. So without Lifting Motor and autobox even higher, you'll not be able to put a New one back in.
This Method is possible by putting the car up on flat ground, every Wheel for 10cm (i had Wood girders to Drive on, 1 m long for every wheel. And an extra jack for the gear Box lifting.

The above link in the post is very usefull if anyone finds this thread looking for help.
It also contains a link to the Alantic British youtube video.
It sounds like the plastic sump may be a pain in the backside and the metal sump is they way to go.
Since fitting have you had any leaks from the metal one?

The filter in the gearbox is a fairly coarse affair - when I had mine changed for a metal pan, the old filter was fine.
You'd be better off not bothering and putting the money into a proper oil flush - because if you just drop the oil out and replace it you don't change much of the oil at all. A flush does something like 95%+ Mark.

Thanks guys. Mikey, I bow to your knowledge so will avoid the metal sump. I was planning on going with the filo method diy style as cant afford to mega flush.
On the tdv6 does the exhaust need to come off to jack the engine enough to get a new plastic sump in? The land rover guide doesn't mention it.

Exhaust doesn't have to come off
I undo the OS engine mount, and transfer box mount, and raise it up as far as it will go. It JUST comes out
EU3 models need the fuel filter unbolted from the chassis mount to give enough clearance.
EU4 has nothing in the way to impede removal and refitting

Anglefire, i know it will probably be fine not changing it and if it was my car i would probably just do the filo flush. Because it is my old man's car, i want to change it just for piece of mind. His car is 10 yrs old, has done 87k and he tows a caravan alot. Probably overkill but just playing safe. I do appreciate the advice though.
Just ordered the bits from Advanced Factors and will let you know how i get on.

Hi, I have just done this job on my D3 and changed it to the split filter and metal pan, it's a fairly simple job to do on inspection of the filter there was what looked like clumps of sludge or possible clumps of filter bits,The box changes much better and smoother now. 8)

I need to do fluid and filter change, but I have 2010 D4,
I have done this job on a 05 TDV6 RR sport,
Is it physically a different job on a D4 to a D3/RRS?

People on here will know better than me but a 2010 you could still have the same 6 speed box?

Hi Chief...thanks for the link, unfortunately it is a 6 speed,
I think it's a slightly different layout to the 2.7 tdv6 RRS,
I can't find much info on the 2010-12 6 speed version,
I read somewhere that it has a thermostat on the oil cooler circuit, so I wasn't sure if I could pump it out when the engine is cold,
Also, being a 3.0, I'm not sure about raising the engine and box due to the extra turbo and pipes etc.

also i was thinking FILO's method but double flash. drain once refilled and then repeat the procedure.
