| Where's best to spend a few years? |

G'day all,
SWMBO is on her way to Oz at this very moment in time, looking at the possibilities of opening an Australian branch of her business.
General idea is for us eventually to spend at least a couple of years over there whilst it is established. With a view to permanent residency if certain other aspects fall into place.
Looking at Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane so our options are pretty open at the moment.
She is looking at buisiness opportunities...
...I want you lot to sell me the lifestyle!
Where is best for a 40+ couple, who like to chill out and take life easy, but within easy reach of one of the Metropolises (Metripolii) mentioned above?
BTW, I will need to return to engineering for the duration so that needs to be a consideration.

Great Idea: leaving the Land of the Long Black Cloud. 
It would depend on the nature of SWMBOs business as the where to go.
Second consideration would be lifesyle:
Mebourne: Cosmopolitan city, conservative, more of an English feel (and weather  ), lots of speed cameras (unmarked) and combined red light and speed cameras plus point to point. 
Sydney: Big city by the sea, more to do, big city feel (more frenetic), business capital. Lots of speed cameras (marked with large signs) just put two in down the road and they have large flashing temp signs on trailers ; "new speed camera commencing soon", just changed to: "speed camera operating variable speed enforced".  very kind them to let us know.
Brisbane: Large town, too far from sea so very hot in summer (you could live on Gold coast and commute). Lots of speed cameras.

On the good side of Canberra,
Got all the usual things we need,
Very easy and quick to get out of town into 4wD territory,
All speed cameras well signposted,
Much smaller city than the state capitals,
And best of all we are a very frendly lot, [ but most Ozy's are ]
Your choice but you realy cant go wrong

2004 - Melbourne, most livable city in the world (not sure why we have slipped to 17th with Sydney rating higher for this year [2007 rating] - obviously the judges didn't drive in Sydney - mad).
However, now I have got my bias out of the way, each capital city in Australia is extremely livable, indeed, Australia is just a beautiful country. It is indeed the lucky country in my opinion.
We have 5 cities in the world top 32 most livable. Surely this tells its own story without any need for me to expand further.

Matthew, couldn't agree more (though I am bias) the major capitals are all . And Rob, it is true I do live here and have lived else where.....but here will always be home......and I love it to bits

Have a think about Geelong as a place to live.
City of about 200 000
Situated on Corio Bay
Just one hour from Melbourne on the freeway.
Just one hour from Melbourne airport (Tullamarine)
20 minutes from Melbourne Airport (Avalon)
20 minutes from the beginning of the Great Ocean Road
The Otway Ranges to the west.
The Wombat Forest to the north - a great place to 4WD.
The Bellarine peninsula to the east.
The famous Bells Beach surf beach 25 minutes away.
They also know how to play football!  Aussie Rules, that is!
Geelong has an industrial and manufacturing basis, and is also a university city.
its also a pretty friendly place to live. We moved here from Bunbury in WA 17 years ago and we love it! Still like Bunbury though.
