help pls - lights dim, multiple error, clocks reset, amber P |
|
Been following several threads and really appreciate the good insight and reading in finding faults with my Disco for several years - thank you. Please help me and my Indy resolve this one, been going on for almost 6 months and really need help.
Discovery 3, 2005 model, V6 petrol S, 171,000 kms, excellent condition full services and in mint condition.
When driving early in morning (normal temps in South Africa) within first 2 kms going over speed bumps the following happens
- yellow P light on dash flashes
- then multiple errors from HDC, suspension, transmission fault, engine system fault, park brake error
- then while this is going on the rev counter, speedometer, fuel gauge and temp gauge drops to zero repeatably. Up and down
- bongs all the time
- Red P light flashes with the yellow one
- Sometimes red P stays on
- then command shift is not available
- then all resets sometimes, or i stop and lock and reset and start again and dissapear.
- sometimes it does not reset
- some days one error all day, other days 20 errors in first 10 mins
- errors mostly occur in the mornings but have been found in the afternoons but much less
- at night you can see slight dim in the lights
- also the dash light goes out during errors
- the car does not stall, or loose power just carries on normal during all this
We have checked and worked on the following
- replaced alternator
- replaced bulbs
- replaced brake switch
- new battery
- check multiple ground cables and wires and done some repairs where poor contacts was found
Any advice on where to look for issues will be much appreciated, car is going in again soon.
thank you in advance

So yesterday i picked up the Disco from my Indy and can report on the following.
We did suspect the alternator some time ago and installed a reconditioned one for around R4500. My indy was able to swop out an alternator from another SV6 petrol and the errors suddenly went away.
So we ordered a brand new alternator from LR and replaced it, and I am now 1 day without any errors - and holding thumbs
will report in few weeks again

reporting back after a few weeks of using the car - no errors whatsoever and once again falling in love all over with the Disco. So no more reconditioning of alternators for me in future.
during this time we purchased another Disco, this time a newer 2012 Disco 4 V8 Petrol. What a pleasure to ride this car, ride a bit stiffer and so much more power.
interesting for me - is it lighter on fuel than my old V6 petrol? We decided to avoid diesels due to all the breakdowns i know of, so sticking to petrol.
how much more fuel efficient would a diesel be looking at the following senario's
- we only use the disco's for long travelling on holiday
- i have a super light foot
- does not cruise over 120km/h
i am getting around 12l/100km, does this sound accurate?
