Quality of tyre pressure gauges
The weekend we did a trail with some friends. When it came to deflating the tyre I got some assistance from my friend who uses his old manual tyre pressure gauge. I have a rubber sealed digital version.
He deflated a front tyre to my requested pressure of 1.9 BAR. When i checked it with my gauge it showed 1.75 BAR. This deviation was consistent on all tyres he did.
So the question... how trust worthy are these little gauges we use??!!

Not very!!!!
I had one that under read by about 50% from new, and very rapidly found its new home to be the wate bin.
Current key fob sized digital one is just about OK on the test line at work, but my "steam driven" mechanical one reads about 10% over at 2bar, and is not self consistent, so is heading to the bin soon.

The best you can do is ensure that you measure all 4 tyres with the same gauge . At least the tyres will all be at the same pressure ,which is better than having 2 on the same axle at differing pressures .

I have three tyre gauges. One is digital from the AA, (£4.99) the other is German & has a clock type dial (£15.00) , the third (digital)was a gift.. I had them tested at by a company that checks gauges, torque wrenches etc for the motor trade. At 35psi the two digital gauges were +1psi; the other (dial) was -1psi. I doubt there is too much to worry about. All seem reasonably accurate.

I remember reading a comparison test in the last few years (might have been in a caravan magazine) and the one that came out best was the cheapo pencil type from Halfraiuds
