Removeable Tow Hitch

Hi all,

What is the current thinking on the removable hitches?

I'm moving from D3 to D4.
My D3 has the fixed LR tow hitch and the D4 is back to the removable one.

Am I better swapping the removable one to fixed on the D4 or continue with the removable one ?

Does the D4 suffer from the same issue on the D3 if the removable one is left in place?

Thanks

JC

Yes, the removable ones shouldn't be left in place when not towing (although mine is at the moment), as for whether you need a fixed one depends on what you are towing and how often.

If you are doing lots of towing I would go for fixed. The removeable one is still prone to being nicked or, if not removed for a while, seizing up. There are anecdotal stories of them dropping off while towing but I haven't seen any first hand reports so don't know the authenticity of the stories. I suspect these events are caused by abuse or incorrect fitting - if they ever occurred in the first place.

I tow irregularly so it suits me to have the removable one. I have had the hook about 10 years as I originally got it for my old D3. It performs great, I've had no issues with it and it has passed the LR special inspection (can't remember the service bulletin number). I always remove it after a period of use and never leave it on for more than a few days.

It's like any bit of kit, if you look after it and follow the correct fitting and removing instructions they are fine.

I switched to a adjustable tow hitch from www.weigh-safe.com. The Weigh Safe Drop Hitch effectively measures the tongue weight of your towing load, improving the vehicle tow load balance. The hitch fits a original Landrover NAS spec Landrover 2 inch receiver (Partnumber: LR040248) which can be ordered on Ebay/Amazone. Great solution as my offroad trailer was 5 inch higher than my hitch. Problem solved.
