Engine system fault, non starter and no code!
Hi can anyone help. I have a 2005 D3. When I try to start it I get 'engine system fault' on the display but it won't start. I took it back to the garage where I bought her and they could not find any faults stored. The glow plug light sometimes comes on briefly before going off. Out of good will they investigated and checked the glow plugs and over a couple of repeat visits changed the injectors AND ecu but it has reappeared. This time the "engine system fault' doesn't always come on but I usually have to get out the car, lock it, unlock it, get back in and try her again and she usually starts.
Is this now an immobiliser fault on top of the original starting problem!
Any ideas please, I haven't got a clue what to look at!

I've suffered this exact issue issue. Last winter I had it intermittently for weeks. ESF on the dash before I even tried to start, no faults reported in the IID. There were faults stored of course, but nothing out of the ordinary. It would sometimes take me 40 mins to get the car to start.
I found it was less likely to occur if I charged the battery every night, even though the battery wasn't at all low, or sub standard. Checked transfer box and main ecus for water, checked the main connectors in the wheelarches, all a-ok.
Tried loads of things, to no effect. Then the door locking packed in and I found the usual leaking sunroof drain. Fixed the splices in the passenger side gulley and the starting problems went away as well.
A few other things were suggested at the time - oil temp sensor, duff battery, alternator. I tried them out of desperation - intermittents are the worst faults because you aren't ever sure if you fixed it or not, or it goes away when you open the toolbox.
This summer I had one or two episodes of ESF while driving, then one morning no start at all. No stored faults, couldn't find any electrical issues, canbus resistance was right, all connectors clear etc.
Keith Gotts identified a duff injector, changed it and all has been fine ever since. I know before it failed the injector trim values were a bit 'off' but the car was running very sweetly on the Friday, and wouldn't start at all on the Sunday. While tinkering I got it to start and run for a few seconds a couple of times, then ESF and stall.
BTW, don't ever park in a multistory with the passenger door handle up against a concrete post - that will be when the car decides the remote locking should fail

This morning it took a turn for the worse. 4 degrees, flicker from the glow plug light. Finally starts, reverse off drive and it stalls (automatic!) gets it going again and called in the local BP for proper diesel....wouldnt start. Got half a mile down the road and cut out again!
When it's running it runs as sweet as a nut, no lack of power or anything. Not a happy bunny

I have moved house since it started so have only just literally found an independent Land Rover specialist, just waiting to get it booked in.
The starting problem has been ongoing for 6 months, the cutting out started at half 3 this morning in the fog!

Hi guys,
I know it is an old story, but it seems I have quite a similar experience.
A few days back, after driving 30 km on the motorway, the engine stopped at the toll booth. Impossible to restart it. No fault code (apart for the usual). Cleared the faults, no change. Starter runs, but engine does not start.
I swapped the injectors (Before that, I changed the nozzles). It started like a charmed again.
Today, on the way to work, engined stopped when getting into the last roundabout in front of the office. I had to tow it home again.
No fault code (apart from the usual EGR).
I am charging the battery to test again tomorrow morning... I will keep you posted.

This morning, battery fully charged. Starter running normal.
Engine not starting.
No fault codes... D3 TDV6 for holidays use,

Have you checked the fuel pressure from the LPFP it could be something simple like a relayAndrew

Hi aja4x4,
I checked it today.
I swapped the engine starter relay and the fuel pump relay.
No change.
I used a shunt to force the fuel pump. When I pressed the shraeder valve, the diesel got out. Clear and regular flow.
I tried to measure the pressure, it was below 0,2 bar.
Still engine not starting... and only 1 fault code : P138E (Capteur de position de commande du limiteur de la pression d'admission A du turbocompresseur - Performance minimum/maximum Arrêt).
Since it is a turbo pressure regulation fault, I guess it has no link to the fact it does not start. D3 TDV6 for holidays use,

Clean the MAP sensor without poking anything into it (carb or brake cleaner) Then check the movement of the turbo actuator rod from inside the n/s/f wheel well. A coat hanger will assist, as will a long artists brush dipped in a mix of copper grease and engine oil. You will need to remove the heat shields at get access to it. It does not travel very far but it should be free and smooth. If you get an assistant to cycle the ignition on and off a few times whilst you watch the actuator rod, you should see it move as the actuator cycles to clear any carbon from the turbo vanes. Hi guys,
I went the electronics check way.
I removed the battery, cleaned the engine ECU with vinegar... And now, I have lost all communication with the engine ECU.
That car has me for the time beeing. It now sleeps in my garden, waiting for better weather.
Or maybe it may leave home beeing towed to a scrap yard.
D3 is a very good car. But that particular one has worn my patience for now.

Hi all,
Quick update.
I move the truck yesterday (winched the truck to move it). I grew the habit of winching it when I need to move it. It never starts.
At the end of the operation, I tried the starter. And the engine started. Almost as normal.
I will try again in a few day and keep you posted.
It kind of broke down at some point and yesterday with nice sunshine, it decided to restart by itself... Very strange ! D3 TDV6 for holidays use,

I bought a precise pressure gauge to measure the fuel pressure at the inlet of the HP fuel pump (injection pump).
Pressure is quite low at idle : 0,4 bar.
When I hit the gas, pressure drops. 0,3 bar at 2000 rpm and 0,2 bar at 4000 rpm.
I think I have an issue with either my LPFP or my fuel filter is partially blocked.
