Triple check your wheel nuts
just got my baby back from open heart surgery for a new engine. Shook her down this morning to find a loose rad hose. Fixed that and hooked up my tandem axel 3t van to shake that down before a service 3 hours drive away tomorrow.
I had one (van) wheel up on a stand ... It had been that way for a week or so ... Just tinkering around checking the hubs. Backed up the D3 and dropped the wheel down and took off. You can guess by the title what happened next ... 5kms down the road at 100kmph I check my mirrors and there is a wheel travelling down the dual (lane) carriageway behind me. It starts travelling towards the on coming traffic but smashes into trees before it gets there. Phew ... Nobody dead!
I pull over retrieve the wheel and scavenge some nuts from the other wheels before a police cruiser turns up and on my way. I pulled into an auto parts place at 4.55pm (they close at 5) and they have the nuts!
There is no damage to the van other than stud threads rounded off! I have a 3 hour drive for the van service tomorrow ... I leave at 5.30am .. What can possibly go wrong?
I got home and swmbo asked how did the van go ... Any problems? I replied 'no' and grabbed a beer in each hand ... She already thinks I am a moron and although she is probably correct I don't need to give her anymore ammo.
