Fog lights on with main beam
With the removal of the dedicated main beam bulb from the DRL headlight (replaced with an indicator!) there is a definite reduction in main beam light output. As I very rarely use the fog lights in anger (I cannot remember when I last did so) could they be replaced with an alternative bulb assemble (say a projector bulb) to come on with the main beam?
Would this be ;-
a) legal
b) sensible
c) possible

sure its possible yes - beanie wired up a light bar to his fog switch IIRC
After trying out my MY14 Xenons this weekend I have to agree with you that these things are useless - talk about style over substance

aren't foglights too low to be "legally" classed as main beams?
I think if you have a switch so you can select whether or not the normal mainbeam switch operates them, they are fine.
in terms of being useful as part of your mainbeam, they will obviously add width to the lit-up zone so will help with seeing verges but not sure what extra distance they will add.
changing them for a suitable spot rather than fog lamp will be less effective due to low position on car.

I have just searched for this thread after noticing there is no secondary main beam
Why didn't Land Rover use all that unused void under the drl to accomodate the indicator? There are even two holes to fit bulbs into that space

Interesting point, I am sure I've seen the "lamp" at the bottom light up on an HSE lux. in a video! - what is high beam assist? It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Road Rule 217 states that drivers must not use front or rear fog lights unless driving in fog or other hazardous weather conditions that cause reduced visibility. They must be switched on separate from the main beam (high beam) and dipped beam (passing) headlights.

If you read the original post you will see that the idea was to replace the fog lights with a different beam pattern to enable them to be used in a similar manner to a long range driving light.

Automatic Dip, above 30mph it will put the headlights on full if it senses no other vehicles or street lights, some large reflective road signs can confuse it, as can fog.

As far as I can find, if they are not fog lamps the illuminated area must be no less than 500mm from the ground or above 1200 mm . Not sure if the above 500mm would be met. If below 500mm can only be used in reduced visibility.

If you think about it, people tend to use high beam when theres no other cars coming the other way so cant really see the fogs being an issue, but tbh I cant see them being much use either even with different bulbs.

running with a light in the fog light position will surely been seen as a fog light by others..sadly its become a habit of many in my area to run with fog lights on..include our professional drivers,,,taxi drivers who should know better...sadly again the cops have no time to clock the b ds
