Bike Rack - Why no Lights!
Why do people still fit bike racks without fitting lights? This Disco Sport was on the A14 yesterday, rear lights completely invisible, number plate totally covered with 3 bikes.
If I drove on the roads with my rear lights covered with black tape, I'm sure I'd get pulled up soon enough.Richard

Beats me - thousands on the car, hundreds on the bikes and rack, yet too cheap to spring for the light board.Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana
Thats got to be against the law surely ?The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
They just make the best of everything they have.

Sure is, but whether one complies is up to the individual.

Same here in Ireland. I live near a large very popular mountain bike trail and every Saturday and Sunday the road is full of cars with bikes hanging off the back and no sign of lights.

Probably thinks there is no chance of being caught. Well I can't remember last time I saw a police car on the motorways.

See it all the time; no number plate visible, no lights at rearmost point and the vehicle lights not visible.
Have even had the "WTF you doing, I did indicate" type look/gestures from moron's driving as they cut across motorway lanes or whatever without [visibly] indicating.
This type of thing (like blindly sitting in centre or outer lane of empty three-lane carriageways, rear fogs on in clear weather and cars towing in the outside lane) I would happily applaud the plod for tackling with a fixed penalty and three points TBH

They keep increasing penalties for driving infringements but there aren't the traffic officers to enforce them. Speed cameras replaced a lot of traffic cops but they can't see infringements or check up on licences, MOTs and insurance.2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone. I wondered if it is the hassle of having a towing socket fitted? I guess if was as easy as buying the bike rack, they wouldn't mind so much.
I saw a system years ago, that stuck sensors to the rear lights, and 'relayed' the signal to the trailer board lights, without needing a socket.Richard

My brother in law is German and there is no way you would chance that there. They have a proper frame that fits onto the ball hitch and the bikes stand into it. Proper lights, reflectors and number plate incorporated into it.

But with less and less visible policing on the motorway, speed being policed by cameras, peeps are going to think "I'll get away with it".

I've been given a talking to for that. Bikes weren't blocking the plate or lights though so I presume plod was just having a bad day.
Most of the time I think people a. Don't realise they need a light board or B. Have the electrics to plug it in.1995 Discovery 1 300TDI
