Do we know that stop/start is a MOT check? Can't find it after a quick search, and it would be hard to test as it doesn't always cut in.....

If the list of other faults is serious, rather than inconsequential (such as this stop/start), you could speak to to your dealer about Land Rover arranging an “AVC” (Assisted Vehicle Change).

If the other faults that you’ve had have been an minor as stop/start not functioning (I would be amazed if this ever becomes part of the MoT - the circumstances under which it works are so variable as to be near impossible to test), I’d hang on to the D4. It’s the better car! Thumbs Up

I have a MY16 the start stop pretty much hasn't worked from day one, the dealers had it in numerous times and failed to fixit. Its going in again next week for 2 days for another go.

I’ve had 6 Land Rovers over 6 years, all fitted with stop/start and all of them doing at least 35,000 miles a year (so battery is always charged). Some of them have stop/started quite a lot and others haven’t. My latest FFRR hardly does it at all.

It’s only there to fool the official tests into giving a very positive CO2 emissions figure and has nothing to do with Day to Day driving. It’s more likely to do harm than good and when it’s working on a D4, it’s just as likely to cut out when changing from a forward gear into reverse, or when pulling out into busy traffic. I’d leave well alone Thumbs Up

My start/stop rarely works, it went into the dealers to be fixed, which they did for all of three days!!
They updated the system and boost charged the batteries for a bit, no other faults found.
Spoke to them again when it stopped working and they pretty much said there’s nothing more they can do apart from give it another boost charge.

Perfectly honest I prefer it not working, just didn’t want there to be an underlying issue elsewhere.

The Gateway Module only pertaining from MY 2014 facelift is unreliable and prone to failure. Unless the battery is knackered (mine was) this will be the issue for later cars.
LR will be in big trouble when and if stop/start become an MoT issue.
Interestingly I have recently had the use of the F-Pace. LR D5. Jag XE and DS all of these had the 2.2 engine rather than the larger 3.0 and there were no s/s issues. I should add that they were all unimpressive too.

Oh just had a thought my Stop/Start only works when I have my seatbelt on!
Just shunting it about the Stop/Start will not work. Pull off stop at lights put seatbelt on car stops....
May be seat belt control module possible faulty!

My Jag has stop/start. Recently it was mot tested, and I watched the entire test. At no time did they inspect the stop start function.

Did you see the Tiff Nedell road test he did under controlled conditions, in a Renault Megane. Identical route, one with stop start on, the other with it off. A measured litre was put in the car for each run, and it did make a significant difference!

I have emailed the Driver Standards Agency that control / enforce MOT, just awaiting a response. Spoke with a friend that MOT's cars etc he has heard it will come in from 2019 onwards he is going to try and find out more info for me too, he has said the MOT will cost more from next year and take up to 10 mins longer due to new introductions.

The way i read it, If a system is fitted to a vehicle to to help reduce emissions it needs to work, all vehicles tested have to be run to a certain temp for the emissons test anyway. The gov is having to clamp down on poor vehicle emssions as we are way behind where we should be.

If i keep the vehicle LRO will give it its first MOT anyway so if they fail it they can bloody well sort it out

Surely if that was the case they wouldn’t have a switch fitted so you can disable it.
I can see in the future however start/stop will be mandatory with no option to disable it.

I understand that a car without automatic stop-start can be expected to go through up to 50,000 stop-start events during its lifetime, but with automatic stop-start being activated every time the car comes to a standstill, the figure rises dramatically, perhaps to as many as 500,000 stop-start cycles over the engine’s life.

When the engine is running, the crankshaft and main bearing surfaces don’t actually touch, but are separated by a super-thin film of oil, fed under pressure and pumped around the engine but when the engine stops, the crank settles onto the main bearings, and the two metal surfaces come into contact.

Each stop/start cycle means more wear to the crankshaft, main bearings and other components.

It may be that pollution is reduced, by the use of stop/start but engine life is correspondingly reduced, and the manufacturers don't care about the latter. If the engine fails you sell a new or reconditioned engine, or at least spare parts at a decent profit.

I agree, but you can turn air bags off and its the law to have them from a certain year on a vehicle
