spare wheel hoist won't lower

Anyone know how I can lower the spare wheel when the nut just keeps turning and nothing happens? I have tried applying some force to the wheel but to no avail!

Thanks mate and the only suggestion is to cut it off. So I was thinking of trying to cut through the spring and then the cable inside it using bolt-cutters and/or a hacksaw! I think I can attack it from the underside of the spare wheel in this way (hopefully) to get it off!!!

Try this.

Put a socket on it and press down really hard, sometimes the ratchet inside moves
against the rubber seal allowing it to slip. Also, if you can get some help, get someone to hang off the
spare wheel putting additional pressure on the winch.

If you haven't got a spare wheel protector, at least you can get at the cable and cut it to release then
replace the unit for a new one.

I'll give the pressure on the socket suggestion a go - thanks for that
