Extra power (electrical)

Hi all,

I want to fit a FBH timer as the glow plugs won’t last many more winters.
I also want to fit a dash cam that permanently records.

I’m pretty sure these two thing will drain my standard battery pretty quick and stop the car starting

So I see my options as:

Maybe fit a solar panel through the OBD socket to counteract the power drain

Or

Fit a small second battery that these devices use for power and leave the standard battery for cranking and then use the engine to charge both batteries

Any advice would be great as I’m useless at electronics

As always

Thanks

Surely you would only use dash cam when vehicle is moving

The car gets used most days don’t know how much you can drain it before the car won’t start

A lot of new dash cams have a parking mode that records impacts or movements in front of the lens.

They only do this when permanently fitted to the fuse box.

My other car was hit when I was not at home at caused £5k worth of damage that could not be recovered from anyone.

Plus land rovers are targeted by thieves etc and a camera that records straight to the cloud will help any potential claims

don't most dashcam manufacturers offer battery-backup kits ? separate rechargeable battery that holds enough charge for the "parked" mode.

Yeah seen those, they are li-po’s there good for between 10-20 hours depending on camera type I’m looking at several days.

Plus they ain’t cheap.

Was thinking a split charge would work best as the FBH could run for a while and the camera would run for several days without depleting the main battery and when the car started it would then recharge it.

Was only looking at small battery maybe half the size of the main battery and potentially get a small solar panel with OBD connector from Halfords to keep the main at a good level.

Plus I’m the future funds permitting I may want to add extra lights and stuff so a twin battery would be able to manage this

Just got to find a affordable reliable system

Thinkware shuts down when you turn off the car but comes to life and records if it finds movement or can be set to (I think) a picture a second. It also shuts down completely if the battery charge drops below a user set voltage.
