Doing away with dipsticks and replacing with a graphic display is ok but if you overfill your engine oil does the display tell you? Is there a warning?
Bring back dipsticks

robpenrose - Does "Yes" mean that the display tells you - I can't see that?
Is there some other warning?
As Kev says - bring back dipsticks; I'd happily pay a few ££ for one.

But new cars are maintained by the dealer.
JLR don't care what happens post warranty as it is out of their domain.Series 1 V8

So if you overfill the car with oil, and go to check the oil level in the service menu, it will show overfilled. If it’s got an ok amount of oil in, it will show as ok. If it needs oil, it will tell you how much to add.
There isn’t any automatic warning as such, you always have to check it manually, like you would with a manual dips stick. But if you check via the service menu, it will tell you if it’s overfilled..
If you run it low on oil, you won’t get a warning until it’s too late.
Check your oil level regularly. I mostly check mine when cold, normally once every few days as you can check it without any wait. The correct procedure is to do it when hot, but you obviously need to wait which isn’t always convenient and I don’t notice much difference in the level.
There is a function in the IID tool which shows a calculated oil level. I assume it uses the same sensor / methodology as the car uses to monitor oil level.

This is a real bugbear issue with me. The ECU (PCM) knows what the oil level is either 'inferred or calculated' (when the engine is running) or actual (when the engine is not running).
So why does the dash not light up like a Christmas tree when you turn the ignition on and the oil level is critical? Instead it's down to the driver to go through the menu to check manually.
You'd be surprised how many customers don't know how to check their oil level. Some even think that the only time they need to do so is when the oil light comes on. It's now our standard practice to give a copy of the instructions with an invoice.
It would save so many engines.Joe

LR still have to foot the main dealers bill, main dealers do nothing without charging! Only downside to them is they can’t rip LR off like they can other customers. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I also find that the system menu only actually shows me the oil level one time out of ten. The rest of the time it says "Oil level not available".
Is there a trick to getting the car to consistently report the oil level when I do remember to check it?2016 Discovery 4 Landmark black

Check it first thing in the morning before starting the engine. Even 1 click of the starter motor and you'll have to wait again.Joe

Wait 20min to check through service menu
Oil level is typically unavailable for at least 10 minutes after vehicle has been ran. As for overfilling, I find it won't report being overfilled until a short drive and then parked on level ground, and then it'll give you a message of "remove x-number of qts, etc". Not terrible for the engine to be overfilled (within reasonable amount), but better to drain a little out. And hey, draining a quart or so out might remove a tad more gunk that has re-settled.
this is just from experience, I'm sure a lot of people will have more technical explanations
