My commute is 5 miles on the button the first half is 30mph limit so cant load the motor at all.
Normal weather Im just at full temp on the gauge as I arrive at work
Getting colder (sub7degc) fbh kicks in and its gets warmer quicker than normal.
Zero degrees ish and fbh running and its struggles to hit normal as I get to work.
So in the current weather and on normal roads I would say at least 4/5 miles before it shows full temp but even then its not really at full temp so add on another 2/3 miles and you will be cooking on gas.

I start mine remotely 25 minutes before starting car and without engine even starting the temp gauge is between 1/3 & 1/2 so nearly full operating temp when I get in. I suspect some FBH unit are a bit coked up and not operating efficiently.

After leaving our fbh on for 30 mins before starting the temp gauge is as shows. Is this normal? Reason I ask is I’m trying to solve a bizarre problem I can’t find an answer to even on this forum.

I run my fbh for 45 mins In this weather and when I start the car up it’s at its operating temp, however, as soon as I drive off it does drop a little but soon gets back to mid.

Mine is higher than that after 25 minutes but yours is warm enough for a safe guaranteed non glowplug start with no cold strain on the engine.

Heres mine this morning approx -1/2 degc and fbh was run for its usual 30 minutes.
I also notice after running the fbh the alternator runs at .1 to .2 volts less with a warm engine.

so mine is not getting as warm with the 30mins fbh run. No matter how long the fbh runs it always starts and ticks over lumpy and won’t rev.

Took mine to work Monday and found it had warmed 3- 4 miles in with an outside temp of 0degrees. Mix of 30 and 40mph limits. Might think about investing in a remote for the fbh but funds are empty having just bought an IID and needing a new battery
Timing seems to be about normal so I think I might have just been expecting too much initially 1995 Discovery 1 300TDI

Mine will cold start no issues at -3 and run as smoothly as it would in summer. Sounds like it's either glowplugs or fuel problem. I presume it runs fine when it's warmed up and during summer months?1995 Discovery 1 300TDI

I’m 99.9% sure the problem I’m having has nothing to do with glow plugs. Running the fbh via the remote will heat the cylinders enough to fool the ecu into cutting out the glow plug cycle completely so weather the glow plugs are shot or not it shouldn’t make any difference although I do know I have a couple of glow plugs down. Put it this way. I could jump into the discovery in the morning and even if it’s -5 two heat cycles strait away without fbh and it would fire up and tick over perfectly. I have read on here of people who have no chance of there’s starting in the minuses due to all there glow plugs being shot but 30 mins with the fbh running and they have no problem.
Someone has said it could be water temp sensor but I really can’t see it as surly the temp gauge would read faulty. I am in the process of getting one to try. Hopefully it will cure it but I’m not holding my breath.
