Are you in one of the Terrain Modes such as GGS? Usually if you go into Sport Mode it will change down a gear from 3rd to 2nd for example.
If you are going across in to Sport/Manual and it's already in a gear then there is something a bit wrong there.1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8

Petrols may start in 2nd.
But you can't tell that easily.
Push across to the left and it shouldn't display any gear

My d4 does (8sp) press the flappy paddles to move gear when stationary and it
Will drop into 1st, so it’s it second and doesn’t drop a gear when it pulls awaySill protection - LED internal lights - LED reverse lights - boot liner - Dog Guard - Rock sliders

If you are in sport mode and come to a stop without changing down yes it will stay in second and pull away in second. If you come to a stop and change down it should go into first. If you are stationary and change into sport mode in will start off in first. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Mine would only pull away in 4th the other day. First or second is fine!

Just for additional reference here.....
D4 SDV6 8-speed gearbox and it always pulls away in second (normal terrain of course).
It also holds 7th on a cold morning to work the engine slightly harder to warm it quicker - I quite often tap it into 8th as I settle out on the straights. Something I learnt on here "Track day running - Don't put your foot back on the accelerator until your absolutely sure you don't have to take it off again"
Current Ride: D4 XS Commercial Baltic Blue SDV6 fully loaded with heated everything
Track Days: BMW E36 M3 Evolution MY 1996 (3.2 Litre 377 BHP sat in 1,250 Kgs of car, with a pro safety cage and some serious braking power)

YES
The Auto D3 will set off in second. Knocking the gear lever across to Sport/Manual will show the current gear it is in ... 2nd. There is enough torque to move off in that gear when level. The auto box will select 1st if it needs to should you be on a hill.Dave

maybe I need a software update.
As when I move over to sport I get no gear number displayed.
Only when I start to manually select gears, do the numbers come up
