Hi All,
Just looking to pick someones brains after failing to find anything using the search.
The disco temp gauge started to sit below the mid point even on long motorway runs, then last week, after 10 mins town driving, left idleing hopped back in after 10 mins and the needle was at the top of gauge with red light on. But engine not hot at all. Turned ignition off, back on and temp gauge at bottom.
Rest of day the temp would creep up but as soon as at idle the gauge dropped rapidly and sat just above cold.
Thought it could be thermostat, so changed that and temp sensor on top of block with genuine parts.
Vehicle now warms up to mid range on gauge after a 10 mile run, but still sits half way between mid and cold when idle afterwards. IR themometer says large pipe into rad, temp sensor housing and coolant temp doesnt get above 54 degrees.
Does anyone have any further suggestions please?
Spoke to local stealer tech, when ordering an oil temp sender and he suggested I would be wasting time going down that route.
Cheers,
Tom Tom

Check the oil temperature sensor as that is often the cause of the water temp not reading correctly. Bodsys Brake Bible

It wouldn't explain the high temperature readings at all but could explain the lower ones, my car may warm up a bit while driving but cool down again on tickover in cold weather if the FBH is not working.
If not the FBH then I wouldnt drive until the cause is known, maybe an airlock (around the temp sensor) causing damaging hot spots - did you bleed the system properly after changing the stat.
If these free checks don't work then, definitely follow bodsy's advice- he knows his s##t

Hopefully hear how you got on before Christmas
From the checks you've done, it would seem the engine really is running cool, so thermostat or FBH ??
I'm just concerned that there is a circulation issue giving a false reading (water not going where it should to get heated) if that makes sense.
Many (most) on here have forgotten more than I'll ever know, just trying to save a cooked engine.

When mine had a dodgy oil temp sender it would drop to zero ( accompanied by possessed throttle-blipping at traffic lights) but never above normal.

I have the 4.4l petrol V8 and about a month ago, replaced the oil temperature sensor which on the 4.4 is located beside the oil filter.
My gauge was reading OK but I have a ScanGauge II device that plugs into the OBD port and the water temperature numbers were going high - like 206F rather than staying about 195F. At the same time, all seemed fine - the heater did not produce a more than normal amount of heat - just the numbers on the temperature readout were high.
I first replaced the thermostat assembly but that did not change anything , but still a good idea as one gets all new plastic as well as a new coolant temperature sensor - all for not much more than the price of a factory thermostat.
Per Bodsy, I then changed the oil temp sensor and now the temperature readout numbers on my ScanGauge are about what I think they should be. In brief, the new oil temperature sensor was needed; the old one was defective.
Additionally, while I am not certain yet, the engine surging problem for a few minutes that I was having about ten minutes after startup on a cool day, -20C, may have been resolved with the installation of the new oil temp sensor; it is too early to say for certain however about that as a fix.
Re oil temperature part numbers, on my 4.4l, the water temperature and oil temperature sensors were the same part number but that is not true for all engines, both petrol and diesel, hence one might best go the the LR dealer with your VIN to determine the correct oil temperature part number. 2005 LR3 HSE 4.4L AJ-V8 petrol; Traxide Dual Battery; PIAA 2500K Yellow Ion H11 Fog Light bulbs; CounterAct LT-2 Capacitive Corrosion control; LLumar AIR80 Blue clear Infra Red blocking side window film; Liftgate manual release; Schrader Valve "air in" mod to OEM air suspension reservoir tank; Akebono ceramic pads; OEM solid vented discs; LR4 design hitch receiver; Wiggs D4 MOST bluetooth module; Clock on the Dash; 3 Flash signal light mod; Backup Camera; 2015/16 Nav Data update.

I had problems with indicated temp a while back. Ended up being an oil pressure switch located at/on the sump, part number 1316119. No errors anywhere (IID tool included) so it was a trial and error.
Process was:
error in the oil temperature sensor, iid tool indicated negative live temperature read outs. Changed part 1359056.
Car remained the same but no errors now.
Dealer changed part number LR041442: LC temp sensor.
Car remained the same.
Dealer tested different instrument cluster to rule out cluster failure.
Car remained the same.
Dealer chAnged part 1316119, car back to normal. Paul Redding
