Hi all,
I've got a set of 16mm snow chains, I'm thinking fit them to the front wheels, steering and braking etc.
I'm not sure if this is correct, if my knowledge of traction control is right, should I put them on the back wheels ?
I guess the only sure fire way to get this is to put on 4 chains, however, I do only have 2 sets.
The chains are correct for my wheels and tyres.
Hope you guys can shed a little light here, all advice is appreciated,
Cheers All.

Land Rover owners handbook states 'Fit snow chains to 17, 18 or 19 inch front wheels only, never to rear wheels' so I've only ever put them on the front.
Karl, many thanks, I am afraid I need to get a handbook, I was thinking the front wheels but to clarify the matter is a real help.
Thanks for your assistance and stay safe in the cold.

For the record I've found the D3 with a good set of tyres to be pretty competent in the snow without chains and I've not really used mine in the last four trips to the Alps (plenty of snowy roads), taken them along to keep local plod happy really...

Disco with good winter tyres should handle most conditions. Plod will usually (no guarantees mind!) wave you past in a 4x4 when they set up their checkpoints.
In Switzerland there is no specific law that says you must have winter tyres or chains but there is a law, used liberally, that says your car must be correctly equipped for conditions. Woe betide you if you have a prang in the mountains without at least winter tyres on...

I have a set of cheap snow chains but they only really fit on the rear wheels- front is possible but the lack of clearance from expensive bits puts you off. if you need them its bad and put them on the back. Otherwise stay indoors.

See a lot of French 4x4 drivers carrying Autosocks in their cars. Their logic appears to be:
- With winter tyres on a 4x4 the actual need for chains is much diminished (never in my case).
- They are cheap compared to chains.
- Should they ever be needed they are easy to fit and lady friendly.
- They satisfy the French authorities.
- They tend to be moved from car to car without every being used, saving on expense.
- They have no clearance issues.
- They appear to work!
Not sure if all countries accept them as a chain substitute so best to check.
Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
I had two sets as the supplier got it wrong & sent two sets
the sort of work....go on easy & do improve traction on std tyres
but they last about 1 or 2 miles on mixed snow tarmac - even with steady driving
Alternatively my other daughter (in New Zealand) has used "spike spiders" on her VW golf three seasons...& still good for more...+ the fact they are superb in snow / ice conditions.......& very easy to fitBREXIT - done properly.

Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Hi Guys,
The sting in this winters tail has allowed me to push my car to the limits, I've enjoyed playing in snow and managed to get stuck too, slipped on the snow chains which I very nearly put into the garage, and what a difference, a small amount of front wheel spin, then the chains bit in and dragged me up and out of a steep Derbyshire Lane. MEGGA.
Spike Spiders sound great, I just dropped on chains at the right price.
Many Thanks tobYou all

I have used my Wessenfells (sp?) chains a few times this year. The D3/4 does not necessarily need them to get going, but it does if it needs to stop quickly. I always fitted them to the front wheels, and the car is much safer with them.

Sorry for reviving this old post. I owned a pair of Pewag for my RR P38 (18") I have to check but they also fit 19". Are you 100% positive that this chains (the Pewag) will work fine on an LR4? (Planning to get one). I do not want to spend up to 500GBP for the official ones.
