Air compressor replace or rebuild?? |
|
I’ve been hunting around for a physical solution as to why my suspension light is on, being a 54 plate I was hopeful that I would have a chafed wire in the nsf, no joy. My next exploration is going to be the compressor, I have a couple of questions though:
How easy are these to remove?
Do I need anything special to depressurise and refill?
How successful are the rebuild kits?
I’m going to inspect it for cracks etc first and the air reservoir for rust also.

Having read a few threads where people have rebuilt/repaired them and then sometime afterwards they die again I would go for new every time.
Yes its not cheap but you know it will be trouble free for a decent period of time and if you are keeping the car for more than a short period new just makes sense.

Hi I’m new to this forum, and only had my lrd3 since September 17, but I purchased it knowing it had a fault similar to yours. It’s my first 4x4 and I love it..
I decided to tackle the job myself.. Removal of compressor from the vehicle itself is a bit awkward, especially trying to get the hoses out of the push fit commections on the aft side. You need to be handy.
One removed it’s not to bad.. I replaced all the seals, piston seal and air pot beads & filters only to have the same fault on reinstallation. I could feel air leaking from around the pot.. I then fitted an aluminium aftermarket pot cover (fitted it while compressor was still on the car) and hey presto... been working fine ever since - 3 months on..
Cost £45.00 and a couple of evenings after work.. I stress you need to be handy and there are a few videos on line.. take a look before you try...
