My homemade Portable Power Box
Started making a portable (ish) power box at the weekend. Still needs a bit of work as I'm still waiting for some of the bits to turn up.
Will be using it when camping with no electric hook up to power a fridge and some lights.
I'm using 2x33ah 12v batteries, these will feed 2x12v outlets, 1x twin USB outlet and a volt meter. Might add an inverter and ultimately hook it up to some solar panels. All this is contained in one of my Flatdog boxes.
So started off with the box. Used masking tape to mark the position of each component.
Then it was time to get the drill out.
Fit everything in its hole (still waiting for the USB outlet and volt meter).
Had to make some shuttering to keep the batteries in place. Just used a bit of thin ply as had some lying about.
Done a bit of temporary wiring just to see if it works.
Will get some photos of the wiring when I get the rest of the kit.
Cheers

There are plenty of simple combined amp/volt displays on the bay with suitable current shunts. But technology is moving on and I like displays that also include Ah and Watts.
I'm currently misusing ones designed for the RC crowd; sounds odd I know but the RC community push DC electrics and batteries to the limit.
It is too early yet to recommend them but so far so good and they are very cheap. I'm pulling one apart tomorrow to check it out after running it for a while as test equipment. I've run well over 100 amps through it!

Unless I can find one that fits in the volt meter hole, as I've already drilled it, it might have to wait till version 2.
Andy
If that is a limitation then probably best to fit one that does amps too, so you can see what is being drawn from your batteries. In that form factor they are limited to 10 Amps ~ 120 Watts but I guess that will meet your needs.

Already had the box and batteries so I've probably spent about £40 with all the bits.
Depending on what battery you went for I reckon you could knock one out for £100-£150. That's without a charger though. Seen something similar for twice that without a battery.
May make another one as I've got 2 more batteries so watch this space

Hi Andy,
are planning a 12V DC-DC charger too or just a AC-DC charger?

It will be an AC/DC one at the minute as that's the one I've got. Future plans are to add some solar panels but that's for another day. Not had any time to finish it lately so will sort it at the weekend
