From Alpine Glaciers to the Riviera
Two of us (arwV8 and moi) are having a road trip.
As per the title, the Alps to the Med. then we are going to chill for a few days in Switzerland doing touristy things. Approx 2 week’s in total. The Alps part commences in Italy on the 29th July this year.
If anyone would like to join us please let us know.
The trip will start in the UK a couple of days beforehand. You can join us here or abroad, stay with us for the 2 weeks or do your own thing when reaching the Med. Feel free to do your own itinery if you want.
We are using a tour company for the Alps, these are their words
If your thing is long distance overland treks in a non-hostile environment then this it - probably the best tour by 4x4 in the Alps by far !! Starting from the dizzy heights of the glaciated Alps, we'll take you on a simply incredible and completely unique, off-road adventure through the Italian/French Alps, all the way down to the Mediterranean coast. A journey that opens up a whole new world of unspoilt and 'wild' regions of the southern Alps - to places only easily reached by 4x4. Ideal for those with their own 4x4s and are looking for an organised and guided, off-road tour along some of the most rugged and scenic tracks of the Alps. If you want adventure, excitement and to feel a strong sense of discovery, this is a chance to get off the beaten track and experience remote and sparsely populated areas of the Alps. Nature at it’s best for those who don’t mind a bumpy ride.
What's included |> 4x4 support vehicle and guide |> expedition schedule with full route notes |> maps.
S/c Camping: bring your own equipment and overnight with our self-catered camping option. €395pp for the first 2 adults in a vehicle, then €250pp for additional passengers (children under the age of 18 cost just €100). We can also provide tents and ground mattresses too if required - ask for prices.
Comfort Lodging: as an alternative to s/c camping, 6 nights accommodation in mountain refuges, B&Bs and small family run hotels |> 5 evening meals and 5 breakfasts |> €595pp for the first 2 adults in a vehicle, then €500pp for additional passengers.
Note this is not organised by us, DavidSally or arwV8. This is a trip we have joined. I have used this company 4 years ago and really enjoyed that trip. If anyone would like to join us you will have to book through the tour company.
If you fancy it though, please let us know. The more the merrier as they say, although I would think the group size is limited.
Photos from the trip 4 years ago to whet your appetite...

Looks amazing.
Can you tackle this sort of trip in a standard D3 or do you need a modified car?

Standard D3 will be fine. Or any 4x4. But a Land Rover would be best 😄. Not that I’m biased......the locals tend to favour Jimnys. I suppose they are the cheapest

I’m looking at a similar plan, albeit a few weeks later. Looking to leave from Manchester, drive down to Nice then along the coast, north through Italy and into Switzerland. Stop for a few days mountaineering, then return.
I suppose you won’t know the rules regarding right of way or routes in these areas if you’re using guides?D4.5 Facelift, Lazer ST4, Prospeed underbody and rack, IID BT, Compomotive/BFG KO2, Series MFlaps, RAI, Dog Gd+XBB, Alive Tuned, T-Max/YellowTop, RemoteFBH, GlassesMod, WheelWinchMod, Jack Mod, LED Mods, Seized Crank Mod....

The routes through the Alps are old military routes, built in the war to protect the border. I guess a trawl through ‘tinterweb could find them. I use the guide as his knowledge is invaluable when you come across problems eg avalanches. He still finds great overnight locations in time for beer o’clock

Xtrallusion. Mike, the owner, is English but lives in Italy close to the Alps.

We are camping. We thought about using the mountain refuges but decided to sleep under canvas. We are using hotels just off the motorways though on the way there and back.
