EGR blanking idea
Hi everyone,
I’m fitting two new EGR valves today, as mine are both seized solid and broken.
I’m also going to blank the valves off so I don’t have to see them again!
My question is, would it not pay to make a blank plate to fit between the cooler and the EGR to stop any carbon build up in the future? Has anyone ever done this?
Also, I’m planning on drilling and tapping the cooler holes to M8 and the valves to 8mm so they can be bolted on from the front, has this been done before?
Thanks in advance!

If you don't have any annoying dash messages, why don't you just blank them rather than change?
Yes I would have liked to blank them from the manifold, annoying a bigger plate is required

I had EML light on due to them both being seized so needed new valves anyway, just wanted to avoid the new ones getting any carbon on them.

You don't seem to understand, if you're blanking them, you don't need to replace them.
If you're replacing them, you don't need to blank them. Mods:

I'm glad you said that Narpy, I was wondering about the logic
edit: at MY2006, you'll need to patch the software if you blank the EGR's (I believe)Richard

I was under the assumption that because the valves were jammed the motor was stalling hence the EML being on, if they are blanked, can they just be unplugged then?

It's odd you have an engine management light on your MY D3.
Is yours a very late 2006?Mods:

It’s mine, it’s bound to be a odd one!
I’m not sure, however I guess this will mean it needs a patch for the blanking to function correctly?
Or will it be a case of if the valves move ok because they are new, it won’t throw up a fault?

Unplug them clear the codes and see what happens.
Mine are blanked and I did unplug them, the car threw a code but did not put the engine light on, once I saw the code I plugged them back in= no more codes but still no light.

No EML light on MY06. Also MY06 doesn’t need patch when blanking EGR. Well mine didn’t anyway. Unless like Narpy says it’s a very late 2006.

Well, the new valves are fitted and the lights off so I’ll shove it in for the MOT and get that out the way. It won’t take long to stick the blank kit in and try it afterwards.
Cheers everyone

The patch is £100 ish, so now new valves fitted, (and blanked) that's it sorted
