Starting problems
Help!!
Car wouldn’t start yesterday morning... no obvious reason but has been hesitating for the last few weeks on cold mornings.
Just replaced the battery with a yuasa 5000 and all good, started first time, ran for 10 mins with everything off and all great.
Went inside for a quick coffee, went to go out again and nothing, wouldn’t even unlock.
Removed contacts, reconnected and managed to unlock everything, but completely dead still, and won’t lock again.
After a session of bump starting it, as soon as the leads removed within 10 seconds the engine stopped and display went out. Couldnt even lock it again.
Checked battery voltage and got 7volts.
People on FB forum have all said alternator, which at this point I agree. Till last night thought I’d try my chances..... and fired first time. Ran for 20 minutes. All ok.
Just tried again this morning... 3deg our side and started fine......
Now I’m worried about driving it in case I break down.
Any suggestions?
D3 , 2008 se 2.7 diesel.
Nothing has been done recently to make it obvious what’s causing it.

Have you had a multimeter on the battery whilst it's running to test alternator charge?2011 MY D4 HSE

Yes. Been getting very strange readings. 11.8 v when running. But also have the battery reading 6V last night, yet still started this morning.

11.8v engine running, and did the alternator pick up when loaded with lights/heated window loading?
That's a low voltage for running engine.2011 MY D4 HSE

Possible equipment you are using may need a new battery first, as 6 volts will not normally turn a LR engine over.

That’s what I thought it was excessively low. I didn’t think to check for a change under load. Will try that when home later. As for what’s running. I’ve not got any additional kit on the car. It’s bog standard at the moment. So no addition load on the Battery. And it was newly fitted yesterday. Morning. After the problem started.

Alternator’s knackered, prob taken the battery with it. Alternator output at 11.8v is waaaaaaaaay to low with a full battery, never mind a with a depleted battery. Just think “it’s only money”, if you don’t spend it Corbyn will spend it for you.

So if I go down this route. How complicated it it to change? I’ve done thins on a D1 and was quite manageable.
What are these D3’s like to do?

Well RAC have been out and confirmed alternator. Thanks for advise.
Got a replacement Denso from JGS4x4 for little over £200. I’ll have fun fitting tomorrow.
