Not sure, but I suspect the main gearbox on a manual has a built in oil pump which is driven by the engine, so lubrication is reduced when towing. I haven't the manual to hand to check

The owner’s guide doesn’t seem to differentiate between a manual and automatic transmission.

I just read the same. I surprised there is no different instruction for a manual.
I can see no reason why you couldn't tow a manual D3 for some distance. Even if the gearbox pump is not being driven from the input shaft (if there is a pump) the loads on the gearbox are so minimal, the splashing oil should be more than adequate.Richard
