Driving to Turkey???????

Been diagnosed with an Auto Immune problem relating to my blood vessels. They dont know how to treat it yet. It doesn't really effect me too much. Not laid up, or anything.

Have booked to go to Turkey for 2 weeks with Family (Wife & 3 daughters 13,10,6), as of 15th Aug. Holiday insurance in place, and diagnosis declared.

Specialist is awaiting results of tests etc, before confirming whether I can fly or not. I am weighing up my options.

We've had a rough year, so don't want to cancel the holiday.

I am debating whether to consider driving it!!!!!

Via Michelin says 2199 miles in 37 hrs £550 each way.

Would you consider it?

No.

I enjoy driving, and am relatively fit (at the moment! You never know when you won't be), but a 37 hour drive, with kids is quite an undertaking.

It would be different if you were on a driving holiday, then it's not so stressful. If you are driving to be somewhere at a planned time, that a whole different thing.

Wait and see what the Doc says. Thumbs Up

I’d do it for the hell of it, but just me. No way would I want anyone else in the car for that length of time. Thumbs Up

Not quite the same scale but I have a wedding to go to in Gdańsk in Oct, I’d much rather drive than fly. Working on the man-maths for that but cheap flights don’t make it easy! Big Cry Big Cry

Thanks rrhool.

Sorry. Update on above.

I would drive alone, and let them fly. It's with Thomas Cook, so they dont have to worry about anything.
Allow 3 days there, 3 back. I should get a decent 7 days there of the 14. If I can get out the night before they fly, should be there 2 days after them.
I'll just sleep in the car, or cheap? roadside motel.

700 miles a day is too long, that’s a 4 day out & 4 back jolly. Yes on nice empty fast French motorways but you’re not going to have that. Plus for 3 days straight. Believe me, 550 is comfy, 700 would mean you get there knackered. If you’re not used to long haul driving then it’s not wise.

PS Have a look at ferry for part of the way. ISTR there were ferries from Istanbul to Ancona in Italy. Nice cabin, changing view, good food (well that’s stretching it) , just think of it as a cruse. Thumbs Up

PPS Scrub that. https://turkeytravelplanner.com/trans/Ship/tk-italy.html Or you take the train. Complicated but doable. SWMBO and I are looking at that for some travelling adventures.

Thanks DSL, coming from you, after following your recent trip I appreciate it.

Had looked for the Italy-Turkey ferry, and found it had stopped.

Apart from being able to rest, not much point in the Greece to Turkey ferry, as you have to go to at least 1 Island to do it.

on second thoughts, could you not change the holiday to somewhere in Spain or Southern France, and just nail it down there in the car?

Thomas Cook must have some places down there? Would be a lot easier than trying to get to Turkey.

Fill up with loads of wine and beer for the way back. Bonus!

Venice-Simplon Rolling with laughter

Been looking at that as well.

Can't seem to find a location where I can buy a through ticket. Found some that give suggested routes, but you then have to go to 3-4 different locations to get the corresponding tickets booked. Most of them also say that the last section into Turkey, tickets have to be bought at the station.

There is a bus service from London, but I would rather risk the flying... Rolling with laughter

RobP:

Yes they probably have. Half the distance.

Been to Turkey a couple of times in Villa's, but doing all inclusive this time. Doubt if we can get the family rooms etc this late. We've got a 2 bedroom bungalow booked, and SWMBO has already booked and paid for her spa treatments.

Forgot to mention that the Mother in Law is coming with us as well, as we lost my Father in Law last year.

I don't particularly mind staying at home, not because M.I.L. is going, but it would probably take me 3-4 days to do the house work, before they come home... Shocked

I used to drive to cabo roig in 24 hours 1575 miles and was absolutely knackering driving there was ok but coming back was not as nice my brother in law has done it in 21 hours but that 37 is if you dont get lost or take he wrong road so it would more than likely take you longer Thumbs Up

How about the Ancona, Italy to Igoumenitsa, Greece ferry then overland.

Ancona is a two day drive from the French ports, then a rest on the ferry & then Igoumenitsa to, say, Istanbul is a a 9 hour drive.

For that type of trip, and considering you're in a lot of totally unknown territory (literally and figueratively) then I'd suggest a decent hotel for each night, booked so you have a set distance to go and you know you'll get a good night's sleep and decent dinner & breakie. Would suggest AC would be pretty high on the tick list for those nights. Not sure I'd want to sleep in the car in some of the countries you'd pass through.

Not sure I’d leave the car unattended in some of the countries you’d be passing through if going the land route... Whistle
