Steering not returning as it should
Hi all nearly a couple of weeks into ownership and finding out issues as I go along, Not had as much time as I’d have liked to drive the motor due to too much work and no play As per title my steering doesn’t seem to be returning as it should and also seems a bit worse when car gets warmer, It also if you listen closely has a slight whine noise when turning wheel a lot such as when parking like as if 2 plastic or material surface’s rubbing together is the only way I can describe it, is that normal? As previously posted I was going to get 4 wheel alignment done ASAP due to steering wheel not sitting central when driving straight and also due to previous owner having lower arms done at an indie not so long ago and there’s no mention of alignment in history anywhere, I’m hoping its just a stiff UJ or could it be a belt,? Powered steering fluid is ok not sure when it was last changed will have to check through history , Hope it’s not pump or rack, Any thoughts on how I can determine the cause? Checked the obvious and also tyre pressures first , Don’t want to get alignment done if it needs something else first, Or would the alignment possibly have anything to do with the issue ?

get the alignment checked, a good service centre will show up the faults and highlight any other issues
The person who owned my D4 before me had a similar issue. After investigation by an indie garage. They replaced the steering column. Not sure what had gone wrong with it, but had fixed the issue.

Thanks Craig, I’m hoping is nothing that bad but with it getting worse when it’s warmer and with use plus the whining noise is worrying, Do you have any idea what they paid for the column to be replaced?

If they didn’t change the steering significantly from my D3 there’s a lower steering column section with a joint that eventually gets stiff and gives the weird non-centering feeling you describe. Think LR have bumped the price up on it since mine was changed but it’s not too bad.

Before buying a new lower column try lubricating the lower uj with wd40 or similar and check the bolt that connects the top and bottom shaft is tight, if a new shaft is needed don’t be tempted to fit a none OEM or you will buy twice. It can when others can't,

Thanks, M3 , it’s going in to be checked over tomorrow and was going to ask the questions about lubricating it first, as the UJ tends to stiffen up on a lot of motors , I’m with you on the genuine part wouldn’t want to do it twice, Just out of interest what’s the price difference?
