UHF Radio Install

I'm about to get a UHF radio (GME 3440 Remote Mic) installed by Electric Bug who specialise in all things related to 4WD communication and navigation. Paid a deposit at the Caravan and camping show today as they have some pretty good discounts.

What really surprised me is that they said it must be hard wired direct to the battery as Landrover say wiring through the accessories position on the ignition switch will void the warantee (just exactly what warantee I'm not sure). Has anyone heard of this before - it sounds like nonsense to me?

Also, what have othres done re aerial mounting - I don't have a bull bar or racks.

Cheers,
Martin

I avoided this issue by having a second battery and putting an additional fuse panel indside the rear quarter. My radios, fridge outlet etc are then wired to the rear fuse panel to avoid any interaction with the factory loom. Makes it easy to remove things later on as well. I use the same GME unit and have had 2 years good service from it so far.

All the best

Martin,

see the link below for an option for the aerial mount, i have done this and its been working fine for over 2 years.

I too went to Electric bug, however they weren't too helpful as the Disco3 was too new to them back in 2005.

Enjoy the Disco, plenty on the road around Adelaide these days.

Cheers

Thanks,
Scott

Hi,

Battery is Optima Yellow top deep cycle. fitted in factory compartment forward of brake master cylinder

Isolator is Piranha DBE 180S+ electronic isolator kit

http://www.piranhaoffroad.com.au/products/...ummary.htm

Unit is smart enough to let main battery charge and then charge the auxiliary. Auxiliary is not used for starting but can be jumper lead connected if main is flat.

I had it fitted at Top Gear in Alice Springs, could be an easy fit yourself if you have time on hand

All the best

Martin, did you finish your UHF install? I'd love to see pictures of it, as I am in the process of doing something similar.

Regards,

No, it's actually going in to Electric Bug on Thurs for the install. In the interim though I've installed a Traxide dual battery system and Optima Yellow top, so the radio and all othre auxilliaries (including the 2 front pwr outlets) have now been wired to run from that.

More to come.

Cheers.

I had mine hardwired by ARB 2 years ago. I only had a single battery at that stage. I have left the unit on all night a few times but the current draw is low enough not to worry the battery.

I put mine as shown in the pics and is a perfect fit. Desert Traveller, Martin is fitting the newer 3440 which has all the controls on the mic and no longer uses (I believe ) the remote head but retains the remote main body and depending on where they put it, external speakers might be required. I put an external speaker in the unused (for me) speaker box in the centre of the dash.

mine is wired directly to the main battery as I dont see the point of putting it through the aux.

Hi Desert Traveller.

That's a nice set up of your equipment - certainly better than my velcro. Can you please tell me a little more about what work was done and how the items are attached or held in place eg what is holding the radio/gps in place? is that some sort of plate above the radio for the GPS?

Cheers
Evan

Another variation on how it fits.

I modified a seat based ipod mount that has a flexible gooseneck to hold the HF handset and UHF mic.

Dash mat came from dealer in Alice Springs, After market brand 50 or 60 $AU I think. Sutton Motors. Talk to Terry. +61 8 8952 1334. It has an Airbag cutout.

More difficult if you are not in Oz of course. I'll check Brand as it has no external mark
